Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a relief for franchise fans | Review
Here, we will control William "Case" Calderon, who has no voice and speaks through our choices, which unfortunately do not change much, but make the game much more curious about what will be done.
We were lucky to receive access to the game, directly from Activision, which made this review possible, which now arrives with all the love and care that I am feeling for this game!
Campaign
The game's story is well constructed, unlike other games, here we cannot make choices beyond gameplay, so you won't see actual changes. What you will see is the unfolding of a war behind the scenes, now showing some of the dirt of the United States, which somewhat darkens the game, as in its last releases, the Call of Duty franchise focused heavily and worked on Russia as the main villain. Now, everyone is!
You will see secret agents on a quest for the organization called The Pantheon, formed by former agents from the United States and Europe. The Pantheon has no face, not even a leader.
The campaign once again becomes well-scripted and surprising, mainly due to the approach choices that naturally will make you go crazy with some of the possibilities. In one of them, I discovered that a senator's wife was being cheated on, so I found evidence, presented it to her, and managed to pass the mission.
A negative point for the campaign is the fact that our character only speaks based on our choices, which made me a little queasy, but it holds up as the other characters working with you interact.
We had more new characters for this new era of Call of Duty. Being Sevati Dumas, Felix Neumann, and Troy Marshall. Each of them with their own details, but with a chemistry that, even if suspicious at first, calms down and becomes some kind of friendship.
At some moments, I was graced with moments of venting, tranquility, and sincerity, which was the best thing to see, especially when they came from Woods, a character we rescued in Black Ops 2 and went through a lot together. It's hard not to get emotional!
Multiplayer
In the intense shooting exchange, things change, now we have more and more speed being added to the game, which will definitely make many not like the game as much and others love it. However, if you think that "omni-movement" changed something for the game, I say it didn't...
The fact that we can now jump is indeed something new and very cool, which even innovates the gameplay, giving you new, unexpected strategies to enter combat. In some maps, you can even learn to fly, like in the Skyline map, where if you don't calculate your jump, you might end up crossing a window and becoming part of the scenery.
We had many changes in terms of progression. Now, unlike all the others, we have a thousand levels to climb directly, without new levels being added each season, as was done in the last CODs. The beginning of your journey is also a choice now, where you can level up 55 levels and decide whether to continue to level a thousand or stay at the same level.
If you decide to continue, you will go through the 55 levels again, now resetting everything, with you being able to choose only one item from each to start this journey again. The only thing that won't be reset here are the levels of your weapons or camouflages, which means that when you reach the level of a certain weapon, you won't have to worry about redoing everything.
A cool thing about this prestige system is that now we will have almost all the prestige emblems we could earn in previous CODs. Along with that, we also have a tribute to the Treyarch CODs that will have not only emblems but commemorative skins from the games.
This multiplayer will certainly be the one that will give the most rewards, with many items from start to finish. Not to mention the range of camouflages that have arrived for multiplayer, zombies, and will arrive for Warzone by December, when the first season begins and ranked matches start.
The game has returned with some very important systems that we saw in other Black Ops, like the specialist system. Here you can choose 3 passive abilities, having 3 different types for the 3. If you combine them, you will have another ability that will give you extra advantages in combat, making the game more interesting with combinations.
Another return was the "Wildcard" system, where you can break the game rules by choosing a card that will give you a different advantage. One of them is the possibility of having 8 attachments on your weapon, or even being able to carry 2 primary weapons in the same loadout.
The game modes are the same, but with an interesting addition. Now we have the "Death Pledge" mode, where we are 6 against 6, but one character on each side becomes a High-Value Target (HVT). We need to protect the target, which will have plates and when the life is zero, it will just lie down with a pistol in hand. The winner is the one who scores more by killing or keeping the HVT alive.
As for Zombies, I'll be honest, as it hasn't been my thing, so I want to say the basics of what I played!
Now we have more complicated systems with the gobblegums, where we can research and evolve for new abilities that interact with our weapons.
The most striking part of the game is its new maps and the return of the turn-based mode, which was removed in Modern Warfare 3, now being just an extraction mode without weight, but it was fun when it was released. Anyway, Black Ops 6 goes through this seamlessly, delivering a lot of adrenaline and despair for people like me who always get stuck to the wall.
We now have 2 starting maps, but soon we will have new ones, being Liberty Falls, an inland city, and Terminus, a prison where the main characters of the Black Ops Cold War zombies mode are, right after the events of the game.
What I found interesting is that we can choose to use normal operators or operators that are actually part of that story. And I honestly recommend using the operators from the story, as this will bring more dialogues and curiosities about the mode.
Graphics and Audio
Call of Duty has been doing very well in its graphics since 2019, that's a fact, but this time we see a certain lack of innovation in this part of the game, but we can see a good amount of updates in the graphic engine that now the entire franchise uses.
Having added tactical sprint and cover in MW 2019, then changes in weapon operation and the peep forward. Now we have additions of new animations, not only for the weapons but also for the character's movement, which with the omni-movement, becomes minimally "believable".
The graphics are not bad, they are actually the same, what we need to pay attention to is the atmosphere that the game is presenting. The only problem I had was with the footsteps sound, which in the Multiplayer are still quite difficult to hear. Something that was a problem in the Beta, and even with them increasing the sound.
Anyway, the game's overall sound is great, as sometimes you can hear the spring and bolt hitting, especially when you're about to run out of bullets. The sounds are certainly the most detailed part of the game and that was already detailed in the others.
To be honest, this time it even seems to have had a little more concern with this, as many of the sounds are satisfactory and even too realistic.
Unfortunately, I want to complain about some visual bugs and a glitch where you can mess with the game scoreboard (TAB/Options/Select). The scoreboard simply helps you see what's going on, in case you get a flashbang in the face, which is certainly a bit discouraging.
Not only that, but a bug that happened to me was entering a match and the screen going completely dark. I could shoot, walk, and make noise, but I couldn't see anything, only the game version numbers in the corner of the screen.
To wrap up, the game has shown high points that can keep it alive for a long time, especially with its movement, which even if it doesn't change much, players are still discovering possibilities and will most likely come up with ideas that the developers didn't even expect. I am happy to have tested a Call of Duty for the first time at its launch, and Black Ops 6, even happier.
I thank Activision again for sending the game and allowing me to review it on the PS5 platform, as well as the PC through the game pass.
