A child’s play that worked very well.
Lenda do Herói is a success among platform-style adventure games, funny and intriguing, it was released in March 2016, with a special touch of the Brazilians Castro Brothers, and developed by Estúdio Dumativa, since then, the game has been accumulating positive evaluation and the expectation for the release of the sequel, which has bought the first one on the highlight again, it’s available for Microsoft Windows and the pre-required system is at least 4GB of RAM and something similar or better than a GeForce 6800 GT.

Everything began as a simple child’s play – that even the creators didn’t imagine would work out so well, this is because Marcos Castro and Matheus Castro, back in 2012, made a huge success with satires and parodies of famous games, with a lot of humor and excited YouTube videos on the channel “Um Joystick e um Violão” (A Joystick and a Guitar). Because of that, in a determined moment, they decided to launch their own character, one that no one has ever seen before, with a new and original story and music.

This way, as a child’s play, the partnership with Estúdio Dumativa was created, along with musicians, artists, designers, and writers, wishing to create games with a retro aesthetic but with innovations to please the players – a new work of art was born with a big positive point to gamer universe, a game that talks to you and make the narrative becomes a huge story with amazing characters. So, today I do this review at the perfect timing and before the sequel’s long-awaited release.

The Hero Herói

No, you didn’t read wrong, the main character and hero of the game is named Herói (Hero in Portuguese, quite practical, right?) and has an important mission, to rescue a princess, here the story seems cliché, I know, but I promise that despite the platform style of the game seems repetitive, this game innovates in several aspects, especially when we talk about the fun, with funny puns and combination of another factor, the gameplay is excellent.

Anyway, Hero will have to pass for 7 different phases, each divided into 3 acts, in a total, 21 acts, with a battle against a boss at each final, curiously, each of these phases will add a new mechanism to our character, it can be a double jump, impulse, invisibility, and many others that will surprise you, this way, each boss will be defeated somehow with a new mechanism, for example, we’ll use the impulse to run away from the giant scorpion hit that makes it be stuck on the floor, so we hit it as much as we can.

About our hero’s Hero look, besides the image shown above, we can change some things on the menu, choosing among several famous options of famous Brazilians characters, such as Felipe Castanhari, Cauê Moura, and others that will be recognized at the first sign, besides, of course, animations skins, such as head of the pumpkin.

So, our characters will go through dangerous woods, deserts, and places to find the princess that none of the characters seems to know who she is, because they disdain their mission as if it’s a lie, while they sing a really cool story despise having a little confusing ending, for you, it has one song for each act, all are different from each other.

A beautiful PixelArt

About the game’s graphics, I’ll talk referring to the graphics of the year the game was released, it’s been more than 6 years since then. At first, A Lenda do Herói can seem simple and common, as an ordinary indie and retro game, but, with all these animations and pixels that were used to create a creative universe with unique beauty. It draws attention to how beautiful monsters are, especially bosses, it changes their color when they are stronger, and the traps, sometimes are integrated with the environment that we won’t be capable of seeing and will make us lose a little life.

So, here, we need to highlight the diversity of enemies and their design, but it’s also necessary to talk about how the sceneries were well-made by the developers, this doesn’t make the game loses its essence of paying tribute and highlights the visual of old platform games, the clearer reference we see is Wonder Boy/Monster World adapted to Monica’s Gang (Brazilian comic book).

Phase by phase

Here, besides completing the phase to be able to advance in the story, we face some standard puzzles, and deciphering, at the same time as we defeat the bosses, we’ll have to search for collectible items if we want to end the game at 100%. That is because in each act we can find 3 ciphers and 2 or 4 hidden chests, some of them you can only unlock with locked abilities that you’ll only learn after, that is, to complete everything, we have to play more than one time in some acts.

We can also find some insignia, usually 6 of them, collectible, and per 3 of them, one life is granted, so in case the character’s health ends, we won’t need to start everything again. This way, the gameplay flows smoothly, but as we unlock the mechanisms and find more enemies and traps, the player sees himself/herself with the biggest challenge that we see at A Lenda do Herói, which is to be able to associate everything that’s showing on the screen with the background music. In a determined moment, it’s complicated to advance without losing health because it has a lot of action happening at the same time and you’ll not want to stop the background music. Here we see an enormous fragility of Herói, since everything that touches him takes away a little life, sometimes looking like he doesn’t even use armor.

A reason to play

Usually, a game doesn’t stand out for its soundtrack or sound effects, even if they are good, but this is not the reason that you’re playing a game, however, that’s not the case here, it is worth each cent to access A Lenda do Herói soundtrack. Creativity and innovation are welcome, now imagine one soundtrack that can make a platform game, one of this repetitive genre that has been saturated among the players, an excellent creation, with an absurd acceptance and at an accessible price.

The adventure idea isn’t genius just for being an innovator, but also for making everything comic and humorous that makes you want to complete the story because it’s fun, sometimes even ignoring the challenges that can be hard depending on the level of progression that you are.

More than just a musical

Well, I said that just the game audio it’s already worth it, right? But that’s not all, the story and mystery somehow immerse us in the game, you suspect one of the characters that appear in every phase, a mage, that speaks strangely with a bizarre sound, and this makes you curious, and that’s not all.

I’m trying to say that each part, even if it’s just a bit, motivates you to continue playing more since it has a surprisingly well-thought story in the game. Since everyone has thoughts about the existence of one princess that even I thought if this character exists and, if she doesn’t, what is our true mission?

Anyway, with the arts, innovator mechanism, and incredible soundtrack, the brothers were able to create a masterpiece that makes me anxious to even think about the release of the second game, in which another Brazilian famous YouTuber, that is also a musician and influencer, Lucas Inutilismo, will be the main character.

Excellent

It’s really worth it, with very few cons, the gameplay is extremely fun and has an important point: the game was made by Brazilians with Brazilian humor. The success of this work is due to the innovation in many aspects in a clear reference to older games.
