Oblivion Remastered Surpasses 9 Million Players
The remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, developed by Bethesda and Virtuos, has reached an impressive milestone of 9 million players. This success, almost double the population of Norway, suggests a strong interest from the public in revisiting classics and may indicate that Bethesda is eyeing its vast catalog of old games for future remasters.
Bethesda announced the milestone on social media last Friday, with a humorous artwork of the Adoring Fan, surprised by the large number of people who have dived into Cyrodiil. The company highlighted players' achievements, such as completing all guild questlines, but curiously did not mention the completion of the main quest - a fun nod to the fact that many players get lost in the vast possibilities of the game, doing everything except the main campaign.
Although Oblivion Remastered is reportedly the third best-selling game of the year in the USA, it is important to note that the 9 million player count does not directly translate into pure sales, due to the inclusion of Game Pass. Many of these players accessed the title through a subscription. Still, it is a remarkable performance for a game that retains all of its peculiar charm 19 years after its original release.
The remaster of Oblivion is still slightly behind Starfield in total number of players, even with the mixed reception of the latter. Starfield reached 6 million players on launch day and surpassed 15 million last November.
Bethesda has been relatively slow with updates for Oblivion Remastered - a situation that may not have been helped by the 300 layoffs at Virtuos earlier this month. However, the game's resounding success will likely make the company evaluate its catalog with great interest.
The remastering of Fallout 3 seems almost certain, and the possibilities do not stop there. Could we see another re-release of Skyrim? A remaster of New Vegas? Or maybe even Morrowind, even though many fans believe it doesn't need a remaster? Anything is possible when you can sell a few million copies of a title.
With the resounding success of Oblivion Remastered, which classic game from Bethesda would you most like to see receive a remaster treatment and why?
