Fight 'n Rage is a nostalgic trip back in time to beat 'em ups | Review

If like me, you grew up playing Streets of Rage, you are certainly a fan of beat 'em up games, a style that was very famous in the 90s, but there is always some good game bringing all the nostalgia back and presenting all its beauty to newcomers, as is the case with the great Fight 'n Rage. A real trip back in time.
A story outside the box

As traditionally happens in beat 'em up plots, some celebrity, child, or boyfriend is kidnapped, and it is up to the heroes to rescue him, defeat the gang responsible for the kidnapping, and defeat the final boss. Fight 'n Rage tells the final battle between the human resistance and the race of mutants that have enslaved planet Earth.

Not only that, but depending on which character you choose to play, your performance in the stages, and some choices, the ending will be different, which is already a great reason to try the different heroes of the game. But of course, you can't expect something too complex, because, after all, the attraction of the game is to walk around and face the hordes of villains.

A trip back in time

As already mentioned, the game brings that nostalgia of the 90s, and this is proven even more in the beautiful scenarios 8 and 16 bits of the game, with several easter eggs (those images that you immediately make reference to), scattered, as mentions to Street Fighter, The King of Fighters, among other hits of the time.

What makes the game so special

Between a not-so-shallow story and curious easter eggs to find, all you expect from a good beat 'em-up is the gameplay, right? That the control is responsive, and the game offers the possibility of various combos, special moves, and so on. And in this regard, no doubt Fight 'n Rage leaves no room for doubt. With only buttons to punch, jump, and special, this is more than enough for you to blow up the enemies.

An interesting detail is that despite having a bar for the powerful blow to be used when fully charged, the game allows you to give up a certain percentage of life to perform the special as many times as you want. Of course, you must consider whether the sacrifice is worth it.

The fate of Earth is in the hands of three heroes

As tradition dictates, Fight 'n Rage features three selectable characters: the martial artist Gal, the ninja F. Norris, and the mutant Ricardo, who is a deserter of his own kind and sees something in humanity that no one else sees. And here, once again, the plot takes center stage, as each character has a background and a reason for fighting. It is not very deep, but it is something rare to find in games of this style.

Each character has their own moves, with which you will certainly identify some. And this is a very important part, because, in each phase, the level of the enemies increases, bringing more and more difficulty to the player. And here, if you have no practice, don't be afraid to start on the easy mode, or even enter the practice mode, to find the perfect style. It is worth noting that the campaign lasts an average of 2 hours at most.

Rich in game modes

Besides the main campaign and the practice mode, Fight 'n Rage features the good old multiplayer mode, and a great music gallery, which can be unlocked as you earn points in other modes, which makes the long life of the game increase if that is of interest.

The crispy pixel art and soundtrack

Fight 'n Rage has beautiful artwork, with well-crafted characters, making you really feel like you are playing something from the 90s. By the way, everything you expect from a game of the era is here. Sewer stage, elevator, and motorcycle, among other scenarios, are very well designed.

With composition by the talented Gonzalo Varela, the soundtrack of the game is perfect, causing the perfect combination of the nostalgic air that the game wants to pass. All done with great care so that your journey is really a trip back in time.

The game was played on an Xbox Series S and kindly provided by BlitWorks Games for this review.

Excellent

Fight 'n Rage is a trip back in time in every way, both visually and graphically. The gameplay is everything you would expect from a beat 'em up the game, giving you that unique feeling of feeling the impact of each blow to the enemy. Despite the difficulty being a little exaggerated, although progressive, nothing that good training does not improve and make your life easier.
