Escape From The Red Planet - A fun and casual tower defense game | Review

Escape from the red planet is a casual indie strategy tower defense game, developed and distributed by Frosty Pop.
Trapped on Mars

The game starts with you, an astronaut, who has suffered an accident with your ship and is now stuck on Mars, and from there you have to go exploring the planet, facing Martians and looking for a way out, because hordes of aliens come to attack you at every turn and you must protect yourself by building structures to deal with the various types of enemies you encounter as you move through the game.

The story is not one of the focus points of the game, but the gameplay tries to be a little innovative and fun, you will find traditional elements of tower defense style games, where you need to build structures to protect the base, but the game tries to mix shooter elements very simply because you must worry about accumulating energy to build the defense structures, but at the same time have your energy weapon to eliminate enemies as in an FPS.

The game also fled a bit off the traditional in another sense, in Escape From The Red Planet the enemies don't come in a single direction and you must build your structures based on a path, from which they will come to your base, by several directions around your main structure, and from this, you can only build one structure in that direction.

The radar can also help you get a sense of how many enemies are on the way, and also what type of enemy will be the next threat so you can use the appropriate structure to deal with it, but you will only know which enemy will come from which direction when they are already in a relatively short distance from your base.

And the game presents very well the new mechanics and structures that you can use to protect themselves, being very gradual and light, many games of the genre in much in presenting you several mechanics at once, and end up confusing the player making it very difficult to learn how the game works, which is not the case here.

Problems on the red planet

The game despite having a cool proposal has some problems during gameplay you find some errors of poor planning that end up being very frustrating, the game does not have a high level of difficulty, and you can easily pass through the stages without
breaking much head, but still having to think a little.

But when you need to use the first-person mode and aim at some specific alien, which is not the first in the row of enemies that comes towards you, the automatic targeting ends up disturbing, because it pulls alone pro enemy further ahead and ends up being very annoying, disturbing strategically, because sometimes you will lose by not having the energy to change the structure and not being able to eliminate the enemy needed.

Another extremely annoying problem that I found during the gameplay was when an enemy came very close to my base, and I was without energy to build another structure so I would have to shoot the enemy in first-person mode, but as the enemy was very close the aim did not reach him so I could shoot, because the aim takes a long time to adjust to the enemy, which gave time for him to reach the base I ended up losing and having to play that whole level again.

The game graphics are well stylized and match much with the style of the game and the atmosphere that the game passes, the setting of the game at first impression was great, but after some time of gameplay something began to become very annoying, the game music is pretty annoying, it is understandable that the developer tried to do something with a footprint arcade, but ended up not having a good result.

Will you also want to escape from this game?

Not, despite the problems mentioned, the game is quite fun and visually pleasing, its proposal is not to be a game that you will be hours hard at work playing and dedicating to progress, it is just a casual game cozy to kill some time when you just want to relax playing something without having to worry about too complicated mechanics and pay attention in great story plots.

Even some of the problems, such as the audio, can be easily bent if the player disables the sound of the game's music and puts in some light soundtrack of his liking, which certainly matches very well with the atmosphere that the game passes and the sound effects of enemies and weapons to provide a relaxing moment.

Another positive point of the game is that as it does not require a high level of strategy to progress in the game, it can be recommended for all ages, it can be played both by an adult wanting to relax, but also by a child who is already interested in games and wants to learn how to play games with this theme.

So I believe that Escape From The Red Planet, is a good game, meets well with its proposal to be something slightly innovative, casual, and mainly fun, you can easily be entertained for a long time with the light and nonchalant gameplay, and with slight adjustments, the game can easily become something even better.

For this review, Escape From The Red Planet was played via PC, through Steam.

Our sincere thanks go to the Frosty Pop team for providing the game's access key in advance to make this content possible.
