Ubisoft Insists on Remaking Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

Ubisoft continues to reinforce the existence of the remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, even without an official announcement. Now, Edward Kenway's voice actor, Matt Ryan, has added fuel to the fire, suggesting to fans that "maybe you have to play again." This informal communication from Ubisoft and its collaborators has generated constant speculation about the project, keeping it on the community's radar even before its formal revelation.

The lack of a direct announcement, despite the numerous references, generates uncontrolled hype and fragmented information, which is not always ideal for managing expectations of a major release.

Matt Ryan's statements occurred during MCM Comic Con in May 2025, where the actor expressed his appreciation for Assassin's Creed 4 and his desire to reprise the role of Edward Kenway. In a viral video, he mentioned: "I love Assassin's Creed 4. Where is the remake of Assassin's Creed 4? I want to do it again. I want to go to the Caribbean again." Although it was not an explicit confirmation of his involvement, the suggestion to "play again" was interpreted as a strong indication that the remake is underway and may feature his return.

In July 2023, Kotaku had already reported that Ubisoft was developing a remake of Black Flag, a project led by Ubisoft Singapore. The company aimed to adapt the game to the Anvil engine, which powers the franchise's latest titles, such as Assassin's Creed Mirage and the upcoming Assassin's Creed Codename Red. This engine transition would allow Ubisoft to modernize the visuals and mechanics of Black Flag to current standards, as well as potentially integrate the game into Infinity, the hub that will connect future titles in the series.

Ubisoft has not made any official comments on the remake of Black Flag, but the multiple references from within the company itself and now from the main voice cast make its existence almost a foregone conclusion.
