The alternate universe "Wolfenstein" franchise has continued to surprise and shock players and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, is no exception. The game immerses players in a reality in which the United States lost World War II, allowing Nazi Germany to expand its influence. Released on October 27, 2017, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, is the newest game from developer MachineGames, continuing the Wolfenstein imagination. For this review the game was analyzed by Xbox One.
STORY AND GAMEPLAY
The story takes place in an alternate universe where the Nazis won World War II and now rule the world with advanced technology. The player takes on the role of B.J. Blazkowicz, an American spy who fights against the oppressive regime in conjunction with a rebel group known as the Kreisau Circle.
From the beginning, "The New Colossus", immerses players in disturbing and exciting moments, leading them to explore a rich and well-executed narrative. The alternation between past and present adds depth to the characters, especially Blazkowicz, whose painful childhood and internal monologue bring out his emotions and motivations.

The gameplay of The New Colossus is a real highlight. The gunfights are stellar, with precise shooting mechanics and satisfying animated kills. The game offers a variety of weapons and enemy types, ensuring that confrontations never become monotonous.
Exploration is rewarded with upgrade parts and collectibles that deepen the story and extend gameplay. However, some mechanics, like stealth, can be clunky, and the user interface for switching weapons can be a bit fiddly.
The game opens with a dramatic action sequence as BJ faces off against his enemies in a wheelchair, presenting a unique perspective on combat and challenge. This innovative approach adds an element of strategy to the game, as players adapt to the limitations imposed by the wheelchair and learn to maneuver on different surfaces.

This sequence is a perfect example of how The New Colossus combines the frantic combat already known from the series with creative new mechanics. Although the wheelchair is left behind later in the game, BJ continues his journey inside a robotic armored body, which can be enhanced with a variety of movement and combat options.
Character evolution allows players to customize BJ's play style, choosing between abilities such as a charge dash or extendable legs. These strategic choices add depth to combat and exploration.
The strong point of the narrative is the characterization of the characters. In addition to Blazkowicz, the game features a varied and captivating cast, including returning favorites and new additions. The dialogues and immersive dubbing keep the immersion intact and the evolution of the characters throughout the plot is remarkable.

By exploring an alternative scenario where the Nazis won World War II, the game satirizes and criticizes extremist ideologies and totalitarianism, often through insightful and sarcastic dialogue. The characters don’t hesitate to express their contempt for the Nazis and the oppressive regime, often using acid humor to ridicule their enemies.
However, The New Colossus is not without criticism. The beginning of the game is marked by claustrophobic levels and tunnels, which can become monotonous and slow down the pace of the narrative. Furthermore, the variety in tone of the plot is a constant issue, oscillating between dark and disturbing moments and exaggerated, B-style moments.
BJ Blazkowicz faces internal conflicts as he confronts his past and fatherhood, but these deep reflections often contrast with the stereotypical characters and exaggerated dialogue that populate the game.

GRAPHICS AND SOUNDS
In the visual department, Wolfenstein 2 shines. MachineGames' idTech6 Engine delivers rich, detailed visuals, especially in the epic battles that take place in fire-ravaged cities and Nazi outposts in outer space. However, the sound design and audio effects can leave something to be desired, making it difficult to identify the direction of enemies during the most intense moments.
The game features impressive art direction, with well-designed and lit outdoor and indoor scenes. Mick Gordon's soundtrack adds high-energy tones to the action moments, heightening the excitement during battles.
Despite its qualities, the level design can be confusing and lead players to get lost. However, this difficulty decreases with experience and the feeling of victory when overcoming challenges is extremely rewarding.

Some inconsistencies in the plot and tonal variation may put off some players looking for a more cohesive and deeper narrative. Still, the game offers moments of pure entertainment and action, and players who persist through the weaker parts will be rewarded with the excitement of taking down Nazis and fighting for freedom in a unique and mind-bending alternate reality.
When it comes to first-person shooters, we generally expect big action, graphic violence, and a healthy dose of challenge. However, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, goes beyond expectations and offers an experience that mixes intense gunfights with an emotionally engaging narrative.
Ultimately, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is a game that captivates and challenges players in equal measure. Creative gameplay, exciting combat, and epic level designs make the game a memorable experience for fans of first-person shooters.
