The insane battles in a VERY colorful universe.

Smells Like a Mushroom is the newest game, released on September 6, 2024 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows and Xbox One. Developed by Red Limb Studio and distributed by the companies: Fatal Error, Destructive Creations and CouchPlay Interactive.

It is a third-person shooting adventure, possible to play solo or in co-op, that will tell one of the most bizarre stories you have ever heard. Actually... maybe it's just a carrot thirsty for revenge, as it lost its beloved to evil mushrooms.

That being said, properly introduced, I think it's important to talk about my first impressions right away. At first glance, it was noticeable that it is a very colorful and exaggerated game, I mean, this is not a personal issue, however, it can be visually disturbing to a certain extent.

But does it really bother? Well, the way I played, and I believe it's the same for most people, was by marathoning missions successively, so when I finished the game, I received a slight dizziness. However, don't worry, maybe this is one of the only 'issues' of Smells, which can even be adjusted in the settings to your preference.

Since I marathoned, you must be imagining that the gameplay might be a bit addictive, haha. Confirmed, the missions present a slightly higher level of difficulty than usual and what we are used to, so spending 30/40 minutes using up all lives is a recurring event, but you will want to complete them and thus, successively compile missions for your record. In other words, if you are a fan of intense combat, it will be interesting to take a look at what Smells Like a Mushroom has to offer.

Quite creative

One of the characteristics that certainly did not lack in the developers was undoubtedly creativity, from the smallest details to the creation of a very picturesque narrative. I mean, have you ever been able to imagine mushroom villains? Believe me, here they have a very dark air with an even more macabre goal: "extermination, infection and destruction'.

In light of this, some of these little things that catch my attention are the names of the characters, impossible not to give a sincere laugh, so I'll give you some examples: the scientists, Garlic Einstein (he is a garlic) and Nicola Siesta, inspired by the great names of science that I believe I don't even need to mention.

Furthermore, we will play with our hero carrot Carrotado, who after losing his wife Karat, revolts in a desire for revenge. So, I think you've noticed, right? Our characters are vegetables, and the name of each one of them is linked to the vegetable they represent. Quite creative!

In addition to all this, we will still find a gameplay divided into stages, with difficulty available in easy, medium and hard, in an extremely colorful universe, after all, it's worth remembering that mushrooms are well known for this accentuated coloration, so it couldn't be different in a game totally dedicated to them. In fact, about the difficulty, I think it's worth mentioning that the boss of each level is not easy at all, in the first mission, I had to sweat and use up all lives to get through.

Exploring and unlocking

Talking a little about the game mechanics, apart from some simple puzzles found during the stages, all the development of mechanisms revolves around combat, which is the main characteristic and possibly the strongest and most well-developed point of the game.

Explaining, there are several weapons that we can use in combat, being the initial ones, the sword, the pistol, and a kind of grenade launcher. However, by completing the missions, we will earn money to unlock other weapons, which I will leave for you to discover, and also to improve the ones we already have, making them stronger.

However, it is not only the weapons that we will be able to acquire improvements, there are other factors such as improving the healing and ammunition drop from the kills we make, or the health and total amount of life per mission of the character. Anyway, there are many mechanics to be explored, focusing on combat almost entirely.

The vibration of sounds and colors

Granted, I criticized the excessive colors a bit at the beginning of this material, however, it's a very personal thing and, even I, started to enjoy this 'hallucinogenic' mushroomy style (if that word exists) after a while.

The arts here are certainly a point to be positively commented on. The developers went all out on this idea of being a fight for the galaxy, creating environments for each planet, a well-equipped ship with many areas to be explored, not to mention the mastery with which each character was put together (here with that clear touch of creativity) and the insane battles!

Furthermore, for those who like a more retro style, the soundtrack of Smells is all in this style, making the adventures a little more striking, just imagine, a retro electro blasting in your headset while endless sounds of shots keep finding you along the way.
