Fabledom is a city management game with a medieval theme. Developed by Greena Games and distributed by Dear Villagers and Doyoyo Games, the game was released on May 13, 2024, and is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Series S.

Starting the reign

Fabledom is a new city management game with a very friendly and inviting look, it offers several mechanics known to those who are already accustomed to this type of game, such as the need to manage resources, build properly, among several other functions.

But in Fabledom it was noticeable that there was a friendlier tone than other games of the genre, the tutorials were very gradual and calm, so much so that I went through them and barely noticed, as they were very simple, direct and did not look like tutorials, like many that interrupt your gameplay and force you to do what they are commanding, making everything more boring.

The game also does not have hyper complex mechanics, but in the ones already known it executes everything very well, it also does not have a very high level of difficulty, which for me is a very positive point, because I don't need to be 100% attentive all the time and worried about my decision-making, thus allowing me to play more casually and in a relaxing way.

But do not think that the game does not present difficulty, constantly you are put to the test in resource management and making choices that can benefit or harm you. And also in some challenges that if completed you receive prizes, but otherwise you lose precious resources. Not to mention the seasons of the year that have a good impact on your kingdom.

And there are also some events that appear randomly, both on the map and on the interface itself, that can provide or take away resources from you, but some of them are very interesting like trading magic beans or even talking to a giant cyclops wandering around your kingdom cheering up the residents.

Politics, diplomacy and... Courtship?

Fabledom has an extensive map, and in addition to your kingdom's territory, there are several other kingdoms with their own kings and interests. With that, you can also have diplomatic relations with these other monarchs and obtain benefits, or drawbacks, depending on the level of friendship with them.

In addition, the player has the possibility of having a relationship with one of the other rulers, just start courting one of them, and from there complete the objectives they give you, such as making some constructions that are only released during courtship, giving gifts, among other objectives.

Another point that I found very interesting in the game is that it has a very interesting progression system. Depending on how developed the kingdom is, and how much population it has, the kingdom evolves from camp to village, then to town, then to city and so on.

And this is not something that is there just to indicate the size, several constructions and mechanics are unlocked only when your kingdom is increasing in size, something very cool because it encourages the player to seek to evolve and discover what else the game has to offer in the end game.

Another very cool point of the game is the hero system, in your village you have a hero that you can control and send him to walk and explore around. There are some things in the game that only he can interact with, such as the ruins scattered around the map, or special events like the beanstalk.

He also has his own items that give him status, as there is combat in the game, when exploring some ruins there may be enemies, or cemeteries that are also present on the map and may contain some skeletons waiting, so getting good artifacts to strengthen him is crucial.

The magic kingdom is dazzling

The game has a very beautiful and well-crafted graphic style, the cute aesthetics of the graphics complement even more the idea that the game is something calm, friendly and very attractive, but all this with excellent quality and very consistent with what the game wants to convey to the player.

The sound quality of the game is also not far behind, both the music and the sound effects are great, of course they are not extraordinary, but they fulfill their role, and unlike other games of the genre, where the music is repetitive and annoying, here the opposite occurs, I played for hours with the music on and didn't bother me at all.

It is also important to mention that the controls and the menu are very intuitive and simple, which along with the fact that the game does not have very complex mechanics, it ends up having a very quick and easy learning curve on how to play, something that is usually problematic in similar games, as they almost never manage to smoothly pass the commands, which is not the case here.

For all these reasons, I believe that Fabledom is an excellent game, both for those who are already fans of the city management genre, as it is a calm, beautiful and relaxing game, but mainly for players who do not have experience with this type of game, but want a first contact as it can be very friendly to new players.

We especially thank the studio for making the game available for testing.
