Defending the kingdom in The Rogue Prince of Persia | Review
The chaos in Persia
The story of The Rogue Prince of Persia begins with the prince, who is determined to prove his worth as a future king, since he has not yet become one. He acquired a mystical ball with exceptional powers that gives him the ability to go back in time when he is about to die.
The Huns are at the borders of Persia, and the Prince's attack plan is rejected by his father, who sees him as too inexperienced and reckless. With his father's refusal, the Prince decides to defend his people on his own. However, upon reaching the invaders' camp, who used shamanic powers, despite a fierce battle, the Persian army loses the battle and they set out to take the capital.
The Prince, defeated by the Hun king Nogai, is rescued by his old mentor Sukhra, who takes him to the hidden oasis outside the capital city for treatment. Once recovered, the Prince immediately heads to the capital and soon realizes that the evil king is losing control of his dark magic.
And from there, the gameplay begins, with the prince trying more and more times to fight the enemy forces, and with each failure, he learns from his mistakes and returns to the camp, this is the main game mechanic, which regresses the character back to the initial point of the camp every time the player dies.
Along the way, you will unfold more of the story, whether by meeting NPCs who are allies and friends of the Prince, who have more complex dialogues and even mechanics, visiting locations or even with enemies and bosses, who also contribute to the narrative.
The stormy paths
The game mechanics are diverse and varied, let's start by talking about the movement mechanics, which are a trademark of the Prince of Persia franchise games, and here is no different, you can do parkour through the scenarios climbing walls, jumping and climbing on poles, performing wall jumps and many other movements that make the game very dynamic.
During gameplay, you will find some rooms where the focus is on parkour, with no enemies, but the scenario will punish you if you make a mistake, something very similar to the bonus areas of older games, like Crash Bandicoot. The game also currently has 6 different types of scenarios, which will certainly increase when it leaves the early access phase.
Speaking of biomes, the maps are randomly generated each time the player dies, creating a very good and non-repetitive replay factor, since there is no way to memorize the paths and where the enemies will be positioned, but rest assured that there are chests and altars that can provide you with stronger items and weapons, which makes your journey a little easier.
Still talking about the maps, some places and NPCs can be found on the map and serve as assistance to the player, such as Ferreira Astara, who can improve your weapon for a little gold, or the sacrifice altars, where you exchange some life points for a better weapon.
The game also features a good variety of enemies, each with its own attack peculiarity, movement, and even how to deal with and position in the scenario, something that was very well used to create more difficulty. The Rogue Prince of Persia currently has two bosses available to be faced, but it has been mentioned that there will be more in the final version.
And you have a variety of primary weapons such as daggers, axes, scimitars, and secondary weapons such as bow and arrow, Chakram, and some others, totaling 8 weapons in total so far. It is also worth mentioning the artifacts, which increase some stats and give some effects to the character, such as increasing the amount of gold dropped by an enemy, maximizing healing, or poisoning when attacking.
The greatness of the Persian world
The Rogue Prince of Persia is a game that is not only fun but also extremely beautiful. Its graphics are somewhat cartoonish but with a very unique style, making the scenarios, environments, and enemies very characteristic, thus bringing meaning to the contrast between the areas, where these elements change a lot, but without losing their aesthetic power.
Still talking about the graphics, something that surprised me were the animations. In my opinion, they were something that really stood out in the graphics, because they were extremely beautiful and especially fluid, making it so that even if the character was performing a complex movement, it did not look strange.
Now addressing the sound part, the soundtrack was also very good, it manages to immerse and bring a track that refers to the Arabian theme, but without using those cliché songs that we all know when it comes to the theme, a very positive thing that both portrays ancient times and gives a modern touch to the game.
The sound effects were also very good, complementing the animations very well and helping to create even more the sensation of something organic, that really happened, for combat and scenario animations. They are also present in some interactions on the map itself, such as teleportation locations in the areas, when opening chests, and collecting coins.
For all these factors, we strongly recommend The Rogue Prince of Persia to all fans of the roguelite genre and also to those who are already familiar with the franchise and want a taste of something new, especially considering that the game is in early access and will have much more content in its final version.
The Rogue Prince of Persia was played on the Steam platform kindly provided by Ubisoft.
