Beat pirates in a high-level card game (and on the high seas!)
Welcome aboard!

Pirates Outlaws is a game developed and published by Fabled Game that takes place in a pirate world, where the player assumes the role of a captain who must assemble a deck of cards with hundreds of abilities to face enemies and challenges along his journey.

The game features over 300 cards with unique abilities and effects that can be combined to create powerful strategies. Each playable character has a set of unique cards that reflect their abilities and characteristics.

Initially released me 2019 for mobile and PC, Pirates Outlaws arrives for Xbox One, Switch, and PlayStation 4 on March 29, 2023.

Don't take your eyes off the horizon

Despite not having a linear story, the game makes up for it with a world rich in detail that depicts the life of pirates on the high seas. As a captain, our mission is to explore the seven seas in search of treasure and glory, although we will have to face many enemies and unexpected events such as powerful whirlpools and sea monsters along the way.

The ambiance of the game is very original and captivating. If like me, you also like board games, you will feel like you are playing a game that navigates between Cartagena and Pirates! Here's a tip for the folks at Fabled Game: Pirate Outlaws would make an excellent board game!

Besides the environment, the game presents us with several unique characters, with thematic abilities and skins that give a special touch to each of them. There are 16 playable characters, ranging from shooters and carpenters to a chicken. Yes, a pirate chicken captain.

These characters interact with objects and other NPCs along our exploration path. So, the story ends up being told this way, through dialogues with these other characters and events that occur during gameplay, such as when we save a cook or feed a hungry woman. The most special thing about it is that the narrative condenses with the gameplay, making the storytelling more dynamic.

Each area of the game has a different theme, such as a tropical island or a port city, and presents specific challenges and enemies.

Why negotiate when you can fight?

The gameplay in Pirates Outlaws is based on a card system that combines a lot of strategy, planning, and a little bit of luck. We must assemble a deck of cards that represent our character's abilities and actions, and use these cards to defeat enemies and overcome the challenges presented. Despite being a familiar game format, Pirate Outlaws has many features and collectibles that make the game very original, fresh, and fun.

During combat, we choose from card options to play each turn, and the cards have different effects that can attack the enemy, defend the player, heal, or provide other benefits such as increasing critical chance or saving ammunition. Combat is fun because it requires us to evaluate our options carefully, making the most effective decisions possible.

During the game, we unlock new cards and upgrades that increase their power. These cards are chosen when we stop at markets or when we experience an event in the game. It is crucial to choose the right cards to increase the synergy of your deck. If you are defeated, part of your power is stored and you will come back a little stronger each time you try again, just like in traditional rogue-lites.

I, for example, managed to make a sniper that recovered ammunition, and every time I killed an opponent, I gained a new card, to the point of being able to shoot and kill many times in sequence, so I was left wondering whether I was a real pirate or a bloodthirsty Marine. Also, because the games are simple and dynamic, you will play very quickly and will enjoy not only the gameplay but the art and effects as a whole.

One of the elements that make this game so unique is the fact that each playable character has its own abilities and theme cards. For example, the Admiral character specializes in collecting coins to increase the damage of his already strong cards, while the fortune teller character specializes in big burst damage, but she needs the right cards to do this.

The cards are also organized into different collections, such as "Ship", "Crew", and "Equipment", which provide different benefits when combined. For example, the "Ship" collection has cards that increase the player's speed or damage the enemy when colliding with them. Crew cards are divided between Officers and Sailors. They have specific powers that can greatly improve gameplay, such as extra damage or healing cards for the player.

The game also features card packs that are unlocked as the player progresses in the game and completes missions. These packs contain new cards that can be added to the player's deck and increase their customization capabilities. I was impressed by the variety of cards and enhancements that the game offers. There are hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of different combinations that will keep the game feeling new.

We also have several missions that offer unique rewards, such as exclusive cards and rare treasures. We also have different game modes such as the Browse mode which is like a traditional campaign and is divided into various scenarios where we face enemies and other challenges, the Arena mode where we face waves of enemies and final bosses, and the Tavern Challenge where we will choose predefined packs and face enemies until we challenge the all-powerful Tavern Master.

All of these elements together deliver a very rich and dynamic experience in which you can spend hours having fun and testing new ways to progress in your pirate life. And being able to explore the seven seas on console, with this new update coming soon, will no doubt bring new pirates to the amazing experience that is Pirates Outlaws.

Sailing through the sounds and graphics of Pirate Outlaws

Pirates Outlaws features a very nice, unique visual style reminiscent of cartoon aesthetics, reminding us of games like Don't Starve, Slay the Spire, and a bit of Darkest Dungeon. The characters, enemies, and environments are all well-drawn and animated quite fluidly.

The details of the characters and enemies are also striking, as each of them has its own personality and visual style. As if that weren't enough, we also have skins that further enhance the characters and customize the game experience.

The sound effects are also very interesting. The sounds of weapons, attacks, and cards are satisfying and support the immersion in the game. Also, the soundtrack is well-chosen and helps create an atmosphere of adventure and danger.

Overall, the visual art and sound of Pirates Outlaws are satisfying and contribute greatly to the player's immersion in the game. The original visual style and animation, combined with the well-placed soundtrack and sound effects make the experience of playing Pirates Outlaws a very enjoyable one.

For this review, Pirates Outlaws was played on PC through Steam.

We are immensely grateful to Fabled Game, who by providing us with the access key for the game, made this content possible.
