A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is a survival horror game developed by Stormind Games and published by Sabre Interactive for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is based on the A Quiet Place film series and features a new story. It was released on October 17, 2024.

Staying low on the radar

A Quiet Place is a survival horror game, inspired by John Krasinsky's horror movies of the same name, but in the game the plot is different, here we follow Alex, a young student with severe asthma problems, whose life changes drastically after a mysterious invasion with meteors falling from the sky.

And we start playing in the pre-apocalypse, getting to know a little about the characters, and then following them after everything had already started and things had stabilized to some extent, including with the survivors already aware that the monsters are attracted to sound and their behavior is not friendly.

The story is actually quite interesting, the way it unfolds and is well presented right at the beginning of the game to demonstrate the strong intentions of the characters, Alex's bad relationship with her mother-in-law, how she is dealing with her pregnancy discovery, and how deeply this impacts her survival is pretty cool.

And the game has some references to the movie, and if you haven't watched it, you might miss some of them like the collectible spaceship and the sound of water indicating a safe area, free from the "Death Angels" as they are called in the movie.

A good portion of the lore is told through letters, notes, and papers found around the map, usually they tell the story of characters who are or have been in that place, and in this game it is very well executed, you can discover much more about the characters we know, about the places we are in, and about how the people in this world dealt with all these changes.

Stay quiet and no one gets hurt!

The game mechanics revolve around the obvious; stay quiet, which is the main premise of the series, but the developers managed to complicate things a bit and make everything more dynamic by adding certain mechanics that spice up the gameplay.

In terms of level design, although it's quite strange that even in areas where groups of people are supposed to be, like the hospital that would be a base, there is a high amount of cans and other things on the ground that make noise and attract monsters, these obstacles help to create tension and require more caution when simply walking around.

Another interesting point is that the protagonist has asthma, which made me develop a certain level of dislike for asthmatics (joke), because she tends to have these crises during the game at very inconvenient moments, like having an attack from getting tense when seeing a monster and attracting its attention, if you haven't taken precautions and collected some asthma bombs, you will probably die.

The item system is quite simple, you have batteries to charge the flashlight, asthma bombs for when Alex's lung indicators are bad and to prevent an attack, and you also have the noise detector to see the level of noise you are making in the environment, and you can also pick up some capsules around the map that cannot be stored, but are used to reduce asthma.

And another optional but very fun point is sound capture, in the game you have the option to turn on the sound capture of your own microphone, so if something startles you and you make noise in real life, it captures and plays the sound in the game, which can attract enemies and even cause your death, but it adds a certain level of difficulty and makes the game much more fun.

The sound of silence

Although the soundtrack of this game is not the most memorable, the sound team did a great job, because think about it, in a quiet and silent place, every little thing makes noise, and they nailed it, every door opening, every puddle of water stepped on or can kicked, was very well done to create the main point of immersion in the game.

The feeling you get is the same as when you have family visiting from out of town and you get up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water, every step is taken meticulously to avoid making noise and waking everyone up, but here when you drop that EXTREMELY noisy aluminum cup on the floor, it's not your uncle who will wake up but a giant monster that will kill you.

The game's graphics, although not perfectly polished, are beautiful, the landscapes and buildings are very well done, the characters are also cool, but at this point I think there is still room for improvement compared to the rest.

In terms of performance, there's not much to say, the game is not heavy, it ran very smoothly without freezing, lag or rendering issues, this part was very well executed and didn't cause any headaches.

Overall, the game was very good, surely people who watched and liked the movie will have more fun, because I had the impression that the game was made to be an extension of the experience of those who have already watched the movies and want an extra dose of what they felt in them, both because of the references and the immersive part of the gameplay, I think that if the player already comes with this "background" from the movies, they will have a better experience.

But don't be mistaken, it's not that the "pure" player, who has never had contact with the work, won't have fun, quite the contrary, the game offers good entertainment for this audience as well, it's just that I believe it can be even better if you've already had that first contact with the movies.

For all these reasons, I believe that A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is an excellent game and has escaped the curse of bad games based on movies, especially because it is a genre that I am a fan of, which is survival horror games, with a good amount of gameplay hours, it is recommended mainly for fans of the movie, but it is also a good choice for those who know nothing about this universe.
