Gotham Knights - A new universe inside DC (Review)

The new Warner Bros game brings to Batman’s universe an adventure of a family united by the loss of their leader, in a fun game full of challenges. One of the most awaited games of 2022, Gotham Knights will be officially launched tomorrow October 21 on PlayStation 5, PC Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.
The game, an action RPG based on DC characters, was kindly provided for this review by Warner Bros. Games and is produced by Warner Bros. Games Montreal, Warner Bros. Enterteinmet and QLOC and was tested on PlayStation 5.

For many, the game was entitled as: “A Batman’s game without Batman”, Gotham Knights shows as soon as the prelude starts an energic battle against your biggest enemy, Ra’s Al Ghul. The main focus of the story is the fall of Batman, his last investigation, and a secret society that forces the rise of Batman’s Family such as Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Red Hood on fighting against crime.

To this point on you just have to enjoy an all-out slugfest and the dynamism made in the entire map of Gotham City’s open world, which was beautifully drawn, besides bringing back the security in the chaotic city that is on the hands of criminals and facing gangs on the streets to discover more about the dangerous The Court of Owls.

Since the Batcave is destroyed, Bat Family or Family Batman, as you prefer, see themselves forced to make another base: the Belfry. This secret headquarters is where our new heroes will gather together with dear Alfred to unravel and investigate crimes and from the last investigation that Batman was working on, they will unite forces to discover everything that connects this investigation to Batman’s death.

The villains: Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Harley Quinn, and the colossal Clayface that are also bosses in the game besides of course the mysterious Court of Owls, a secret society made by the most riches Gotham’s families that becomes the main goal of game narrative.

Belfry is the place where are gathered all the information collected from the streets, besides being the space our new heroes live, is where we see them talking to each other, drinking a coffee, or analyzing a piece of new evidence. And there is one Spy Hunter arcade in the corner if we want to take a little break.

The game is rich in details, even outside the missions and these little differences make Gotham Knight a rich and complete game.

Patrolling Gotham City’s districts

Gotham Knight comes with an amazing visual at first. The look of the director Patrick Redding, the same director of Splinter Cell Blacklist, and the narrative design of Far Cry 2, bring all the magic we see in comics to a Gotham filled with neon and details. And even though some players may argue that lacks the new generation 60fps I don’t think that the 30fps well-done on Unreal Engine 4, left something to be desired on the graphic artwork super elaborated by Gotham Knight.

Another positive point is the map, Gotham’s open world challenges us to cover streets and alleys in search of criminals and collectible items speeded in all five districts on the map with good combats. With these amazing visuals, the creator couldn’t let aside the photo mode in the system that pleases us with beautiful images of the city.

It didn’t surprise me that a lot of times we lost the main focus of the mission because we were adventuring through the map with a motorcycle or hooked on bat hooks in lampposts and buildings all over the city just to appreciate the view.

A beautiful view with a soundtrack made especially for the game, immerse us right away in Batman’s world, even though he is not the character of this adventure. The environment brings the sensation of knowing the secrets that exist around Batman’s universe on DC, despite the character you’ll be playing with, for the simple fact of having watched the animated series before.

This narrative identity together with sound and images, with a modern touch, full of lights and little details, makes the fans of Batman or the Dark Lord play for several hours without realizing that the time is passing at all.

With a few frame droppings which I saw during the speed-in-the-air scenes, we see how some windows have a drop on rendering and clouds being formed as if were a glass plate in the 5 hours of the game. This a problem that I believe will be easily corrected with an actualization patch by Warner.

Another bug in the scenario also happened in the air, when we cover the air jumping from building to building, we enter a wood structure, such as a grid on the top of a house, where Robin got stuck, it was necessary to do a quick trip to Belfry to change my character. After that, I was thinking that this would happen in the battles too, but gladly, it didn’t happen on the ground.

Wearing the armor of one knight – Batman’s Family

We have unique abilities and equipment for each character that we can play with on Gotham Knights. The costumes are customizable and yet have other skins, that you can unlock according to the game progression and this can give a more “badass” style for each character not only because of the style of the costumes but also because the combat will be each time more insane.

The abilities are unique and can be upgraded according to the combat and when you complete missions. It has an ability tree, and because is individual the game becomes one RPG in which choosing the right character for each mission is essential to finish it. For example, where Batgirl failed in defeating enemies, Nightwings can defeat them, and so on.

Double weapons and a lot of strength are used by Red Hook, he is heavier in physical fights, and this makes the commands just a few seconds slower than lightness characters.

Robin uses one foldable stick and one slingshot with thief abilities being his strongest points, he also has experience in psychological games and behavioral sciences, abilities that makes it easier to accomplish any mission.

Batgirl uses equipment similar to Batman, and an oracle for forensic investigation, besides being able to hack and codify computers and technological systems to unreal mysteries around the city. She was highly trained in several fighting styles, such as kickboxing, capoeira, and jiu-jitsu, her weapon is the tonfa.

Nightwing uses electrified escrima sticks, he is mastered in acrobatics which makes him the perfect character to use in combats that need more speed. This way, you can choose a character to use when you need to face enemies night after night.

Vigilant in the Chaos

To cover Gotham’s streets, you need to use Spy Hunter, one radar that identifies criminal actions and finds clues, the game has a gigantic map full of elements to investigate, besides the collectible items spread through the map.

When you identify a mission or see on the radar a small group of criminals, it’s time to use your abilities to defeat the enemies and finish the day.

You can cover the streets on foot, on air, or with a motorcycle, the last one is customizable and has upgrades that I haven’t had the opportunity to level up until the maximum yet, but I’m sure this will bring the same fear that Batman used to give his enemies.

The game has dubbing, subtitles, an option for color blindness, an interface scale, and some facilities on commands, but there isn’t a simplification of commands besides mounting and dismounting the motorcycle that has one different command, not like other games and this can bother some players.

Another important point is that the game has a multiplayer mode. The promised coop is just for two players, I couldn’t try this mode because the game isn’t released yet so I don’t have access to other online players to try some combats that I’m sure will be another extra good experience in the game. We didn’t have any information about a mode PVP or crossplay.

Gotham Knights is a game rich in combat, full of investigation and adventures to be unreal, in a universe that is different from the one we know in DC, innovated by the group of vigilant in the search for answers, taking control of the city, highlighting the way of exploration and progression in an RPG as also in a well-detailed narrative.

Gotham Knights will be available on October 21, 2022, and will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. We thank Warner Bros and the Brazilian team for making available the game key for this review.
