The last faith is a metroidvania-style platform game, released on June 13, 2023 by developer Kumi Souls Games. The game is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS.
Among ruins and tombs

The Last Faith recounts the tragic fate of Mythringal, an ancient city that thrived on wealth, arising from the fusion of magic and science. However, it has always been subject to the dominance of ancient religious beliefs that were codified into laws.

Its glorious past, told through old tomes in now-burnt libraries, has been replaced by a malignant corruption that has infiltrated the land following the disastrous results of a civil war and a deadly disease that has left few survivors.

Our protagonist named Eric literally finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy, which brings to light the hidden secrets of Mythringal's ancestral past and the origins of a war started by messiahs and false prophets and ends up culminating in the ruin of this society.

The various narrative elements that allow us to reconstruct the story are presented through text files and lost letters found throughout the scenarios, contributing to further fuel the game's lore. However, The Last Faith has an important focus on other gameplay features, such as its gameplay.

Something that is a very strong legacy of Bloodborne, where the game's story is not told completely through dialogue, but depends on the exploration of places and items. In The Last Faith we don't have that strong subjectivity that exists in the game it is inspired by, the information is more direct, but it still depends on the player's exploration, so that they have the complete context.

Sword, ax or... Pistol?

First of all, the development team, Kumi Souls Games decided not to leave the territory of the genre and chose to offer a non-linear progression, linked to the gradual discovery of useful character improvements to access areas that you previously couldn't, something very common in metroidvania games.

An example is a hook capable of attaching to rings, allowing the character to reach elevated areas, an aerial sprint to easily overcome chasms and other abilities. In this, The Last Faith chooses to be quite conservative and not propose major innovations in terms of level design, remaining classic, but always very careful and elaborate.

A game of this genre clearly cannot have a combat system that is imprecise, poorly structured and incapable of allowing the player to face the most diverse situations in their own way. This is where The Last Faith offers a wide range of weapons, ranging from short and long-range attack tools, other powerful and slow or agile ones, but capable of causing less damage, and even firearms with very different characteristics.

Our character can equip himself with a melee weapon and a firearm, but it is important to remember that in certain situations, magic can be stronger than pistols and rifles. But as soulslike games tend to be, if you don't improve your character's stats, it's impossible to use some weapons because you haven't completed the prerequisites.

As the genre requires, The Last Faith has a good dose of backtracking, so keep in mind that you will have to return to areas you've already visited to access new areas, but fortunately the game has many teleportation points, which makes returning much easier, and these points are very well distributed, so there is no headache.

Mythringal or Yharnham?

The Last Faith, led by the dark-gothic style. The sensation you will experience when traveling through the environments, especially during the discovery of the first zones, is that of being immersed in a kind of two-dimensional demake of Bloodborne, as I previously mentioned the game, the massive inspiration that the creators took from the game is visible, from From Software.

Gothic architecture typical of Yharnam's cathedrals, squares with destroyed carriages and even dead horses, and opponents like hunters immersed in Miyazaki's fascinating nightmare, made me think that there was little originality in The Last Faith. If we add to this the soundtrack with coughs and serious groans, and a story that talks about a disease that has ravaged the city, it is clear how the associations become quite evident.

However, The Last Faith has a distinctive soul of its own, which is only partially that of a metroidvania following the best gameplay structures offered by the most popular games in the genre. In fact, there are several new elements that make it clear that this is a much more elaborate project than the obvious double tribute which, in the initial stages, borders on imitation at times.

These are details that are really of little importance when thinking about The Last Faith as a whole. Although it doesn't invent anything, the solidity of the game and the artistic aspect are really top quality. The gameplay and story are also very interesting and keep the player engaged, especially those who like the style or have a strong nostalgia for Bloodborne or Castlevania.

But for all this, I believe that The Last Faith is one of the most successful metroidvanias of recent years, capable of being traditional in structure and, at the same time, hybridizing with soulslikes thanks to some clever additions that add depth and variables. that distinguish the game. In a genre so saturated and full of excellent works, it was not easy to stand out.

The Last Faith was played via PC via Steam.
