In an interview with IGN Brazil during The Game Awards 2024, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Yoshinori Kitase, franchise producer and director of the original PlayStation Final Fantasy 7, addressed the controversial sales of the most recent chapter of the acclaimed and beloved seventh game trilogy from the Square Enix .

During September, Square Enix released a financial report stating that Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth "did not meet profit expectations" according to Takashi Kiryu, president and representative director of Square Enix . Kitase, however, believes that the sales numbers for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are secure and satisfactory.

"In terms of sales expectations, Sony held the PlayStation Partners Awards in Japan, and there was a category (Grand Award) in which they awarded the three best-selling games, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was one of them alongside Black Myth: Wukong and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. So, I think being recognized in this aspect gives me the certainty that we have reached a certain level," Kitase told IGN Brazil. The Grand Award of the PlayStation Partners Awards rewards the three best-selling games developed in Asia on the platform between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024.

We do not have access to the sales expectations that Square Enix had with FF7 Rebirth, but when we look at titles like FF15 and FF7 Remake, we must take into account that one of them was a multi-platform game and the other was an exclusive at the end of the life of PlayStation 4, a console that already had an installed base of over 100 million units sold in April 2020, according to data from Sony . However, according to Kitase himself, the days of Final Fantasy as a console-exclusive franchise for PlayStation at launch seem to be coming to an end, which may indicate a promising future for the Square Enix franchise as it moves away from exclusivity, and Kitase himself admits that it is necessary to offer the game to more platforms.
