YouTube details guidelines for videos featuring violence in games

Clarifying monetization parameters to provide predictability for content creators is a necessary step forward in the platform's relationship with digital channels, ensuring that creators can plan coverage of major releases without losing compensation for their work. YouTube, through guidelines maintained by Google, has updated the formal criteria for displaying ads on videos that feature graphic violence in video games, in a strategic move ahead of the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms.

The guidelines detail exact timings for including intense images within audiovisual material.

If explicit violence appears in the first seven seconds of the recording or on the thumbnail, the content loses all monetization. Displays occurring between 8 and 15 seconds place the publication in the limited ads category. Strong scenes shown after the initial 15 seconds remain eligible for standard advertising, as long as the video is not exclusively composed of images focused on shocking the viewer.

The platform defines explicit violence as depictions of beheading, dismemberment, torture, brutal murders, and injuries with a focus on fluids or mutilations.

Conversely, traditional combat with low blood fidelity, as well as blurred or out-of-focus sequences, continue to be eligible for full monetization.

Materials focusing on mass executions of peaceful NPCs, sexual violence, assaults on minors, hate conduct, or representations of real-known figures in situations of aggression within the game are permanently excluded from the ad program.

Specific rules have been outlined for the display of other recurring themes:

Scenes of use, sale, or promotion of illicit recreational substances within the narrative context of games will receive standard monetization, with only age restriction locks for those over 18 remaining possible.

Age restriction mechanisms implemented at the end of 2025 continue to operate independently of revenue generation and may require confirmed login even on monetized videos.

The algorithm's analysis will consider the entire work, evaluating framing, zoom on injuries, titles, and the channel's editorial focus.

This overhaul benefits the coverage of various action titles with future releases, such as Marvel’s Wolverine and Gears of War: E-Day, whose combat dynamics present a high level of visual impact.

Producers are advised to avoid slow-motion captures and compiled edits of violent acts at the beginning of the file.

Adjusting automated systems to protect the work of those who produce quality content on YouTube is a mature move by Google that provides peace to video editors. However, the timed dependence on seven or fifteen-second thresholds exposes the bureaucratic coldness of platform rules, which continue to treat the gaming ecosystem as a threat to advertisers rather than recognizing the artistic maturity of the industry itself.
