Xbox finally receives Black Myth: Wukong after 1 year of waiting
Black Myth: Wukong officially arrives on Xbox Series X/S on August 20, 2025, exactly one year after its release for PS5 and PC. Pre-orders will open on June 18, while the versions for PlayStation and PC will have a discount during the same month.
The delay of the Xbox version generated months of speculation. Officially, Game Science stated that the absence at the initial release was due to the need for optimization to "achieve our quality standards". However, parallel reports suggested a possible exclusivity agreement with PlayStation, which was reinforced by the company's silence on the matter. Microsoft itself stated that the delay was not due to "platform limitations", preferring not to comment on the "agreements made by our partners with other platforms".
The controversy increased when, in early 2025, the CEO of Game Science, Feng Ji, posted on Weibo:
"But this shared 10GB memory [of the Series S], I really can't take advantage of it without a few years of optimization experience."
The statement contradicts Microsoft's version and reignites the debate about the limitations of the Xbox Series S as a possible technical hindrance.
There is another theory: the date of August 20 is traditionally celebrated as the Monkey King's anniversary, the central character of the work, which would reinforce the idea that the date was chosen for symbolic rather than commercial reasons. Game Science itself indirectly suggested this:
"Bringing Black Myth: Wukong to the Xbox Series X/S - and ensuring that the experience met our internal quality standards - was not an easy task. Fortunately, we were able to complete this challenging task within the first year after the game's official release."
Since its debut, Black Myth: Wukong has become a milestone for the Chinese gaming industry. With 10 million copies sold in just three days, the title is widely considered the first Chinese AAA with global impact. Its success has been driving a new generation of Chinese action and RPG games focused on PC and consoles, such as Tides of Annihilation, Phantom Blade Zero, and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
The release on Xbox represents not only the expansion of the title to new platforms but also an affirmation of China's growing presence in the development of multiplatform premium games, a significant shift from the previous focus on the local mobile market.
