Xbox bets on exclusives to boost the new console

The lack of heavyweight standout titles took a major toll at the launch of the current devices. In a report published by GamesRadar+, internal sources close to the Xbox backstage revealed that the brand's leadership has no intention of repeating the same oversight with the Xbox Series X|S, which hit the shelves without a major exclusive release to draw the crowd to the new platform. The goal is to make Project Helix, the codename for the company's next hardware, an immediately appealing purchase by renegotiating the weight of major projects to enhance the ecosystem's competitiveness.

The change in strategy was charted early in CEO Asha Sharma's tenure to stop losing ground in the console market.

Securing a consistent flow of experiences only available in-house is an essential step to regain the support of the brand's fans. Matthew Ball, the brand's chief strategist, confirmed this repositioning in a recent interview, emphasizing that sustainable growth recovery requires a steady stream of exclusive projects. He stated that highly anticipated titles like Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be permanent exclusives and assured that these games are just the beginning of a larger wave of productions planned under the same model.

The strategy takes on more flexible contours according to Matt Booty, the division's content director. He explained that the publisher will not adopt a rigid rule across the entire catalog, choosing instead to assess the potential of each franchise individually before finalizing the release windows.

Changing the mindset after years of diluting the platform's identity with simultaneous releases on rival hardware is a late yet crucial decision. Although Microsoft will continue distributing certain titles on competing platforms, focusing on a strong exclusive lineup for the launch of Project Helix indicates that management has finally realized the significance of valuing its own ecosystem to prevent the next generation from faltering at the start.
