Xbox begins testing the conversion of physical media into digital versions
Enhancing the collector's experience for those who have invested in the disc format over the decades by providing the convenience of the cloud ecosystem without taking away media ownership is a masterstroke by the infrastructure team, showing genuine respect for video game preservation. Microsoft started on Monday (31) to release tests of the system that allows linking a digital license to Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, initially making the new feature available to members of the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead levels of the Xbox Insider program.
Once the procedure is active, the user only needs to insert the compatible disc into the console’s reader to start playing the game.
If the release is eligible for the new feature, the platform interface will allow reclaiming the digital right known as "digital entitlement," linking account privileges to that physical copy without charging any additional fees.
Microsoft confirmed that thousands of titles will be accepted into the catalog over time, although the initial list includes a more limited selection of compatible games in this experimental testing phase.
Retrieving the license provides immediate access to digital format advantages, including integration with the Xbox Play Anywhere ecosystem and streaming via Xbox Cloud Gaming in projects that support the tools.
A positive aspect of the technology's operation is that the conversion does not deactivate or render the user’s original physical media unusable.
Even after being linked to the account, the disc continues to work normally in the reader, maintaining the owner’s freedom to lend, trade, or sell the copy in the second-hand market.
The digital license accompanies the disc itself during the transfer: if the media is passed on to another player, the access right associated with the object will also be transferred to the account of the new owner.
The producer emphasizes that this update is part of its ongoing commitment to historical preservation and the portability of libraries across different console generations.
While the feature remains restricted to the closed groups of Xbox Insider, the company has not yet set the official release date of the functionality for all Xbox One and Xbox Series X owners.
Allowing collectors to run their physical media via streaming on Xbox Cloud Gaming while maintaining the resale value of the discs is a clear example of innovation focused on direct community benefit. However, the delay in announcing timelines to the general public and the limited list of games at launch indicate that Microsoft needs to speed up implementation so that the new feature does not remain restricted to test channels for too long.
