Wolves Den: The FPS from the creators of Payday mixes brutal crimes and otherworldly technology
If you've ever dreamed of being a futuristic mercenary, pulling off impossible heists and exploring alternate dimensions, then Den of Wolves could be exactly the game you've been waiting for. Developed by 10 Chambers, the Swedish studio formed by veterans of the Payday franchise and creators of the tense GTFO, the game promises to mix frantic action, advanced technology, and an engaging cyberpunk narrative.
The latest preview of the game threw us right into the middle of the action: no HUD, no menus, no introduction. Just a brutal shootout inside a bank, with intense gameplay and innovative mechanics. This direct approach already gives us a taste of what to expect when Den of Wolves is finally released.
Midway City: A world controlled by corporations
The story takes place in Midway City, a dystopian metropolis where megacorporations rule with an iron fist and protect their secrets with unthinkable technologies. After a series of cyber-attacks, these companies created the so-called "Bio-Stashes" - data storage systems based on human neural patterns, inaccessible by artificial intelligence.
Players take on the role of elite mercenaries, hired to infiltrate these fortifications and carry out extremely risky missions, including industrial espionage, sabotage, prototype theft, and even assassinations.
If all this sounds dangerous, it's because it is. But to offset the risks, players will have at their disposal a high-tech arsenal and a unique mechanic that promises to completely change the dynamics of the missions.
Hacking reality with the "Dive" mechanic
Unlike other cooperative shooters, Den of Wolves introduces an innovative concept called "Dive". With this mechanic, players can hack neural networks and transport themselves to alternate dimensions, each with its own rules and challenges.
In one of the examples shown by 10 Chambers, one of these alternate realities puts players in a space scenario, where parkour will be essential for survival. In another, a Norwegian forest hides monstrous creatures, making infiltration even more dangerous.
According to Ulf Andersson, the game director, these reality changes are not just a visual detail, but directly impact gameplay. Strategies can be completely altered depending on the dimension the player is in.
Modern weapons and brutal combat
Even with all this science fiction, combat in Den of Wolves maintains a foot in realism, especially in weapon design. The game features an arsenal inspired by modern assault rifles, but with touches of advanced technology, like unidirectional holographic shields - which protect players while allowing shots to pass through them.
The action is intense, brutal, and requires teamwork. Just like in Payday, planning each move will be crucial to surviving the missions, especially when enemy corporations send their relentless security forces to eliminate any threat.
Release and expectations
Still without an official release date, Den of Wolves will be released first in early access on Steam, allowing players to experience the game as it continues to be refined by 10 Chambers.
If you're a fan of cooperative FPSs, love a good cyberpunk story, and want to experience an innovative reality-travel mechanic, Den of Wolves promises to be one of the most interesting titles in the genre in the coming years.
And you, do you think this game has the potential to surpass Payday?
