Warner Bros. focuses on Harry Potter, DC, Mortal Kombat and GoT

The Warner Bros. Games strategy for the coming years will be to focus resources on four of its biggest intellectual properties: Harry Potter, DC, Mortal Kombat, and Game of Thrones. The decision was detailed by David Haddad, president of the company's game division, during a presentation for investors in June 2025.

The measure reflects a clear attempt to ensure a safe financial return amidst the current volatility of the gaming market. According to Haddad, the intention is to work with a "games as a service" approach and maximize the capacity of these franchises to maintain prolonged engagement.

"These are our four biggest opportunities for growth and continued investment. We will reinforce teams and resources in these universes," stated the executive.

The commercial results of Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1, released in 2023, were used as examples of how the strategy can succeed. Hogwarts Legacy, for instance, surpassed the 22 million copies sold mark in its first year, while Mortal Kombat 1 reached around 3 million units by the end of 2024.

On the other hand, the recent performance of titles like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, launched in February 2024, continues to be a subject of questioning. The game faced heavy criticism for lacking content and depending on repetitive live service mechanics, with sales below expectations and a drop in players in the first weeks.

The division also confirmed that future Game of Thrones projects are in development, but did not detail which studios are involved or the target platforms. The DC game line is set to continue after Suicide Squad, but with "strategic adjustments."

Haddad reiterated that the focus on well-known IPs aims to ensure revenue stability and predictability. The executive also mentioned the strengthening of the active player base in recent quarters as justification for the focus on live services.

It remains to be seen how the public will react to the intensification of this strategy, especially considering recent criticisms of excessive monetization and formula repetition in established franchises.
