Valve's store achieves a record-breaking billion in revenue
The financial mechanism that supports the computer ecosystem indicates that the release of new titles is facing an increasingly restrictive environment. Statistical data from the analysis firm Aliena Analytics shows that revenue from debut games has been gradually decreasing since the first half of 2024. In contrast, the sale of older titles has surged, jumping from 71% to 79% of the platform's total revenue. Launching a new project nowadays has become a difficult challenge, as new developers must compete for the public's attention with a decade's worth of classics sold at rock-bottom prices, focusing the money only at the top of the pyramid.
This market trend is evident when examining the strategy of major studios to boost their financial results. For instance, Capcom capitalized on the tremendous success of Resident Evil Requiem — which grossed an impressive 194.5 million dollars — to implement aggressive discounts and targeted promotions on all previous entries in the horror franchise. According to Aliena's report, the total revenue of Steam reached a historic 11.1 billion dollars in the first six months of the year, marking a 14.5% growth compared to the same period last year. This surge was driven by an increase in active users in the Asian territory, especially in China, in addition to the rising price tags of new releases and the appeal of cooperative games that went viral on the internet.
"The market's long tail is set in scenery that already has more excellent games than any human has time available to play," highlighted the technical consultancy's report.
Looking at the 2026 crop of productions, a few survivors managed to break through this consumer skepticism bubble by using specific strategies, such as viral hooks, the weight of established communities, or low prices that encourage impulse buying. At the top of the recent revenue ranking is the racing simulator Forza Horizon 6, which accumulated an estimated 197.7 million dollars in a mere two months on the market, with 4 million of that coming from the sale of additional content and VIP subscriptions. The action RPG Crimson Desert comes right after with 190 million dollars in earnings since its March debut, closely followed by the anticipated card game Slay the Spire 2, with 141.7 million dollars, and the underwater survival game Subnautica 2, which secured 133.6 million dollars.
Finally, the independent phenomenon Meccha Chameleon earned 73.1 million dollars and took the absolute lead in volume of copies sold in Valve's virtual store. It's reassuring to see a smaller and theoretically risky project able to stand up to the industry's giants and lead in player volume, proving that creativity still finds oxygen in this sea of identical corporate sequels. The consolidation of these billion-dollar figures shows that the computer ecosystem has never been so financially strong, although the entry barrier for new creators is becoming nearly insurmountable due to the monopoly of large catalogs from the past.
