Unreleased Resident Evil movie gets a trailer with a classic vibe

Delivering an original storyline without relying on the same overused clichés of Hollywood adaptations is the perfect approach to revitalize a film franchise. Under the direction of Zach Cregger — a filmmaker known for his work on Barbarian and Weapons —, Sony Pictures released an extended preview of the new feature film set in the Capcom universe. The preview strongly focuses on building isolation and psychological tension that marked the origins of the series in video games, showcasing the rapid spread of the infection around Raccoon City within a few hours.

The script casts actor Austin Abrams in the role of the delivery man Bryan. The young man accepts a well-paid urgent job to deliver medical supplies to the city, but the journey spirals out of control when he seeks help at a secluded house on the road and encounters the first infected individuals.

The official premiere in theaters is already confirmed for September 18.

Even though it is a storyline parallel to canonical events, the director scattered striking visual references for the most attentive fans. The video highlights classic items taken straight from the screens, such as the traditional shotgun ammo boxes and the unmistakable typewriter used to save progress.

Narrative innovations are welcome when they respect the essence of the original work. By focusing on an ordinary citizen fighting for his life while trying to communicate with his girlfriend Michelle, the production seems to hit the mark with the suspenseful atmosphere instead of relying on exaggerated shootouts lacking dramatic weight. If the film maintains this technical fidelity until its release, it promises to be a delightful surprise on the big screen.
