Unknown 9 canceled: Reflector Entertainment closes franchise after commercial failure
A Reflector Entertainment, developer behind Unknown 9: Awakening, announced the cancellation of the franchise after the game's performance last year fell below expectations. In a statement, CEO Herve Hoerdt stated that the title "did not come close to the company's expectations" and that the series "did not justify any further exploration of this universe."
Unknown 9: Awakening was planned as an ambitious blend of Assassin's Creed and Tomb Raider, starring Anya Chalotra (from the series The Witcher). The proposal integrated a transmedia universe with podcasts, comics, novels, and web series, but none of these initiatives managed to attract much attention, even before the game's release, which suffered considerable delays.
With the cancellation of the series, Reflector Entertainment also halted the development of another project in the concept phase, which presumably was a continuation of Unknown 9. Furthermore, the company will undergo a new round of layoffs, following cuts already made in November 2024, and will reduce its operations to a single project in the near future.
According to Herve Hoerdt, the studio will now focus on an existing intellectual property from Bandai Namco, which is "evolving well" and will be the team's main focus.
