Toy Story 5 shatters records in a thunderous premiere
While Pixar's toys steal the spotlight, other productions attempt to secure their share of attention in cinemas. The sci-fi thriller Day of Revelation, directed by the renowned Steven Spielberg, expanded its earnings by jumping from $93 million to $161 million in its second week. On the flip side, the fictional franchise from Lucasfilm, Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu, is marching towards oblivion, adding a meager $7 million to total $322 million. Releasing spinoffs with noticeably tired formulas is the kind of mistake big studios keep making until audiences are completely inundated.
The new Disney animation has proven that nostalgic appeal still rules the current entertainment market. The fifth chapter of the toy saga grossed an impressive $312 million worldwide during its first few days, becoming the biggest debut of 2026. Out of this global amount, audiences in the United States contributed $160 million, securing the film the position of the second-largest opening in the studio's home country, right behind the figures posted by The Incredibles 2. Although investors are celebrating, the over-reliance on endless sequels exposes Hollywood's current creative laziness in betting on entirely new stories.
Internationally, Toy Story 5's earnings placed it as the company's second-largest global opening ever, below only the phenomenon Inside Out 2, which holds the top spot with $383 million. The outstanding commercial performance delights executives, making the year highly profitable for the company.
Global box offices have recorded solid performances for lower-budget productions, which often deliver far more authentic scripts than the inflated blockbusters. The drama Obsession: Happiness is Relative jumped from $286 million to $333 million, transforming into the biggest financial success in the history of the distributor Focus. In the horror and suspense segment, the acclaimed film Backrooms, from the trendy producer A24, rose from $248 million to $272 million. Riding this momentum, the newest parody of the Scary Movie franchise also showed strength by jumping from $173 million to $202 million in total. Nostalgic audiences also didn't overlook the biopic Michael, which continues its successful path by boosting its numbers from $932 million to $960 million worldwide.
