Not even cold reviews were able to stop the avalanche that is Minecraft Movie in theaters. With only two weeks of screening, the film inspired by the best-selling game of all time has already grossed over US$ 550 million worldwide, according to the most recent data from Box Office Mojo. And Warner Bros. Pictures, who bet big on the production, must be smiling from ear to ear with the numbers.

After a thunderous debut with US$ 157 million in the United States — the biggest domestic release in history for a video game adaptation, surpassing the previous record of Super Mario Bros. Movie (US$ 146.4 million) — the film maintained its strength in the second weekend. Even with a 50.5% drop in the American box office, considered normal for blockbusters of this magnitude, the film still secured an additional US$ 80 million just in the North American market, consolidating its position as an absolute audience success.

In total, Minecraft Movie has accumulated:

  • US$ 237 million in the United States
  • US$ 313 million in the rest of the world
  • US$ 550 million globally in just 10 days

Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) and starring names like Jack Black (as Steve) and Jason Momoa, the film relied on a familiar, simple, and comedic approach — clearly targeting a young and nostalgic audience. Although critics have accused the plot of being "superficial" or "predictable," the audience's response proves that the appeal of the Minecraft franchise, created by Mojang Studios in 2009, remains stronger than ever.

"Despite lukewarm reviews, the fans' response has been warm," said a Warner spokesperson in a recent interview. "It's a universe that spans generations, and we knew it had potential for much more."

And this "much more" may already be on its way. Sources connected to the production suggest that Warner Bros. has already started internal discussions about a direct sequel and even spin-offs, expanding the franchise's cinematic universe — similar to what Nintendo has been doing with Mario, Donkey Kong, and possibly The Legend of Zelda.

In addition to the film itself, the success of Minecraft Movie has also boosted cross-marketing actions, with new licensed products, collectibles, and even promotions in networks like McDonald’s, with themed giveaways coveted by fans.

With an estimated budget of US$ 150 million, the film has already more than paid off and is on track to become one of the biggest box office hits of the year. If it maintains its current pace, analysts predict that the film could reach the US$ 800 million mark in the coming weeks — or even break the symbolic billion-dollar barrier, depending on the reception in Asian markets and the extended screening time in theaters.

Will the film win an Oscar? Unlikely. But that it is winning the hearts (and wallets) of the audience, there is no doubt. After all, Minecraft may not have a classic narrative, but its cultural impact is one brick at a time — and now, also golden for Warner.
