The development of Marathon, Bungie's first-person extraction shooter, has just suffered a new setback. According to an official statement published on the company's website on June 13, 2025, the release, previously scheduled for 2025, is now postponed to an as yet undefined date, which will only be disclosed in the Northern Hemisphere autumn (between September and December 2025).

Bungie's game director, Christopher Barrett, explained that the team needs more time to deliver an experience that meets the community's expectations.

"We want to ensure that 'Marathon' is a game that truly reflects the passion that the community has shown for this project since its announcement. We need more time to achieve this vision," he declared.

Despite the lack of a new release forecast, the company promised to carry out a gameplay reveal still in 2025, detailing the main gameplay mechanics, map design, and the functioning of progression systems, which mix elements of PvP and extraction with tactical combat in semi-open areas.

The project, officially revealed during the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, marks Bungie's return to the Marathon universe, a franchise originally created in 1994, even before the Halo era. However, the new game will not be a direct sequel, but rather a reinterpretation with a focus on competitive multiplayer.

Internally, the development of Marathon has faced obstacles from the beginning. In October 2023, Bungie underwent personnel cuts that affected part of the team responsible for the title. In addition, according to backstage reports published at the time by the IGN website, the studio has been reviewing mission structure and reward systems after negative feedback from internal tests.

The delay of Marathon is not an isolated case within Sony Interactive Entertainment, which acquired Bungie in 2022 for US$ 3.6 billion. Other service games from the company are also undergoing revisions, as recently happened with the PvP project based on the universe of The Last of Us, developed by Naughty Dog.

Bungie promises to update players by the end of the year, when a new release window should be disclosed.
