The legacy of P.T. and the plans of Kamiya and Kojima
The creator of Okami and Bayonetta, Hideki Kamiya, has reignited the discussion about the legacy of P.T., the "lost" horror demonstration by Hideo Kojima. In a series of messages on the social network X on September 5th, Kamiya expressed his desire for a new game in the same style to be created. He suggested that Kojima should do it, and even offered to try himself, although with a big caveat.
The answer to this gap may already be in production. Kojima is working on OD, an experimental horror game in collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Peele. The creator of Get Out and Us is joining forces with Kojima for a project that the developer himself promised will be "something no one has seen before." Kojima will likely reveal more information about OD at a special event in Tokyo later this month to celebrate 10 years since his split with Konami.
However, Kamiya's request comes with a series of contradictions. Despite starting his career at Capcom with the original Resident Evil, he admitted that "I hate horror, so it wouldn't be horror... besides, I have no ideas." The developer, who left PlatinumGames in 2023 amid controversies, also harshly criticized the indie success The Exit 8, released in November 2023, calling it "basically just a diluted P.T.."
The cancellation of P.T. in 2015 by Konami left a gap in the market that, according to Kamiya, "strongly influenced subsequent game creators." The fact that the most influential developers in Japan see each other as the solution to fill this void is positive news. However, uncertainty looms over the modern horror industry and whether anyone can truly replicate the success and impact of P.T..
