The Division 2 receives new expansion five years after launch
Originally released in 2019, The Division 2 continues to receive robust support from Ubisoft, which recently launched a significant expansion called Battle for Brooklyn for the PlayStation 4 version. Despite the challenges faced by the French publisher in recent titles, it is remarkable how this third-person tactical shooter game maintains a strong base of active players and continues to be enhanced.
The new expansion puts players on a mission to liberate the Brooklyn neighborhood in New York, which has been taken over by an incendiary faction known as the Cleaners. The content adds two new zones for exploration and combat, expanding the scope of the campaign with an extended variety of equipment and abilities for the character.
Among the technical and gameplay novelties, the DLC includes a 40-level boost, allowing players who prefer to skip the original game content to directly access the new expansion. This decision reinforces Ubisoft's concern to keep the experience accessible, even for those who joined the series later.
"It's impressive to see a title released over five years ago receive substantial updates like this," comments a gaming market analyst.
"Continuous support ensures that the community remains engaged, which is crucial for squad-based multiplayer games."
This extended support fits into Ubisoft's pattern, which also provides regular updates for other long-standing games like For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege. The company's strategy seems to focus on extending the lifespan of its titles, offering content that renews interest and attracts both veterans and new players.
Although the game has not disclosed recent numbers of active players, its presence on the most popular games lists in the genre indicates a loyal audience. The Battle for Brooklyn expansion is already available for download on the PlayStation Store, with an approximate weight of 25 GB, and is included in the season pass for those who own it.
The critical and community reception, although mostly positive, has pointed out issues related to the difficulty in some missions and equipment balancing, aspects that Ubisoft has addressed in subsequent patches since the expansion's release.
