The behind-the-scenes of Xbox are filled with stress and layoffs
The severe budget cuts thoroughly impacted the logistical support of the gaming division, squeezing the partners who rely on the tech giant's contracts. Behind-the-scenes reports reveal that the budget allocated to suppliers and external service providers for Xbox was drastically reduced by 50%, automatically leading to layoffs at outsourced agencies that support Microsoft. This aggressive financial downsizing helps explain recent drastic market moves, such as the developer IO Interactive's decision to permanently close its Istanbul office. Demanding a high-quality standard while cutting half the support funding is a dangerous formula that chokes the production chain.
The silence policy adopted by upper management undermines any attempt at emotional stability in the offices, leaving developers working in the dark. The publishing divisions and various internal branches have suffered severe personnel losses, and the lack of transparent official communications about which teams are being dismantled fuels a scenario of total insecurity — a nervousness amplified by conflicting reports about the real impact of the cuts on id Software. While the MachineGames team in Sweden seems to have emerged unscathed so far, Arkane Studios in Lyon must undergo a complex mandatory consultation process required by French labor law before implementing any restructuring.
"Knowing that a second wave of cuts could come at any moment has led to panic and anxiety among the thousands of people working for the company," reported journalist Jason Schreier from Bloomberg.
The toxic environment of demands extends even to studios that are theoretically more protected by the strength of their brands. Blizzard, for example, faced what are considered minor cuts compared to the rest of the conglomerate, but reports indicate that their employees are far from being able to work at ease. The lack of information about the timing of these new rounds of layoffs creates immense psychological pressure: those remaining in the offices must take on the workload of their dismissed colleagues, being forced to produce twice as much with half the resources, fearing that any drop in performance might become the perfect justification for dismissal in the next round.
This routine of upheaval directly affects those who managed to keep their badge after the first wave of mass layoffs prompted by the holding company. The specter of more cuts scheduled for the fiscal year 2027 keeps the technical staff on constant alert in the hallways. It remains to be seen if this aggressive scorched-earth strategy led by CEO Asha Sharma will bring any practical benefit to the brand's restructuring, especially concerning the development of the next-generation console hardware, or if it will only dismantle the company's creative machinery.
