Switch 2 Supercedes PS5 Digital and Xbox Series in Sales in Japan

The Nintendo Switch 2 has reached the milestone of over 1 million units sold in Japan in less than a month since its release. This remarkable performance positions the new Nintendo console above the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and the entire Xbox Series line in the country.

Data compiled by Nintendo Life indicates that the Switch 2 has already totaled 1,101,136 units sold.

In comparison, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (specifically the Slim version), according to Insider Gaming, has sold 975,486 consoles in Japan since 2020.

Combined sales of the Xbox Series line in Japan — including Xbox Series X (320,762), Xbox Series S (337,811), and Xbox Digital (20,854) — total 679,427 units. This number remains significantly below what the Switch 2 achieved in just a few weeks.

The sales pace of the Switch 2 in Japan is the fastest in the history of the country's video games. Despite some criticisms describing it as a modest upgrade from the original model, the console shows considerable commercial strength, especially in a market historically dominated by Nintendo.

Sony, while not seeing the Switch 2 as a direct threat, recognizes the power of Nintendo in Japanese territory. The Switch 2 still has a long way to go to reach the legacy of the original Switch, which has already surpassed 20 million units sold in Japan. However, the debut of the Switch 2 suggests that Nintendo is ready to maintain momentum, especially with future releases such as Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond confirmed for the new system.

Do you consider the initial success of the Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan to be indicative of its global performance, or will Nintendo face greater challenges in other markets where competition is fiercer?
