Sumo Digital announces layoffs amid restructuring

At Sumo Digital, a British co-development company under the umbrella of the Chinese giant Tencent, began a process of mass layoffs this morning. Although the exact number of affected employees has not been disclosed, the company justified the measure as a need to "adapt to ongoing instability" in the industry. According to the official statement, all current and future projects remain unchanged, but the organizational structure will undergo cuts to ensure business resilience in 2026.

This move is the latest chapter in a series of drastic changes at Sumo Digital since Tencent took full control in 2022. Earlier in 2025, the company had already stopped publishing original titles to focus exclusively on support services for third parties. Recently, the group parted ways with the publisher Secret Mode, saw the departure of its original founders in May, and allowed the purchase of The Chinese Room by its own management in July.

From a technical and market perspective, this news is a negative point for the stability of the industry in the United Kingdom. Sumo Digital is known for its robust work in franchises like Forza Horizon 5, Gears of War, and Warframe, but it seems that not even the support of Tencent was enough to shield the developers. It is disheartening to note that, after being bought for billions, the reward for the team is a restructuring that prioritizes financial balance over human capital.

In practice, Sumo Digital is being "reduced" to a pure service provider, losing its creative identity and independence along the way. It is ironic that a company that helped build so many global successes now finds itself in a position of such fragility. For those working in development, the warning is clear: not even the most established support studios are safe when corporate strategy shifts to survival mode.
