Success of Monster Hunter Wilds on PC exposes flaws in strategy
The president of Capcom, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, admitted that the "barrier of PS5 is 'unexpectedly large'," limiting the success of Monster Hunter Wilds on the console. The statement, made in a May interview with Nikkei, exposes an initial sales strategy of the company that did not align with the market reality. Capcom considered PS5 the main platform for the game.
Although the game sold 10 million units in the first month, the success came mainly from the PC. The PC version, however, has been heavily criticized for performance issues, and players will have to wait almost a year for a fix. Capcom was aware of the sales potential of PC, as the producer Ryozo Tsujimoto noted that "there are more players than ever playing on PC, including in Japan."
Despite optimization issues, Capcom plans to increase sales with discounts, such as a 20% discount at the end of June. More importantly, Haruhiro Tsujimoto commented on the popularity of Nintendo's Switch 2, stating that the "response was better than we expected."
Although Capcom has not confirmed that Monster Hunter Wilds will be released on Switch 2, the series' history on portable consoles (Monster Hunter Rise) and the company's optimism about the new platform suggest that Capcom may be planning to expand the game to a broader audience. Haruhiro Tsujimoto's statement shows that Capcom recognizes the need to adapt to the market.
Capcom is seeking new ways to increase sales of Monster Hunter Wilds despite its initial success. Do you believe that a release on Switch 2 would help the company reach an even larger audience?
