Steam generates $15 billion in revenue in 2026
Observing the commercial strength of the digital distribution platform in reaching astronomical figures is excellent news for those monitoring the economic health of PC games, proving how an open market attracts investment and audience without relying on the restrictions of closed consoles. Analyst Rhys Elliott, from the consultancy Alinea Analytics, presented a survey indicating that Steam has already accumulated around $15 billion in gross revenue throughout the year 2026 in the ecosystem maintained by Valve.
According to the study, a restricted group of six major releases this year accounts for 6.6% of the global total, surpassing the approximate mark of $1 billion in joint revenue.
The racing game Forza Horizon 6 from Microsoft leads the revenue chart with $210.5 million accumulated.
The second spot was taken by the RPG Crimson Desert from Pearl Abyss, which totaled $203.3 million, closely followed by the horror game Resident Evil Requiem from Capcom, recording $200.9 million. Completing the group of major releases are the roguelike Slay the Spire 2 with $148.4 million, the survival game Subnautica 2 with $139.2 million, and the action title Meccha Chameleon with $89.8 million.
In the section of the 100 recent top-performing titles on Steam, the total revenue reaches around $2.4 billion, an amount equivalent to 15.9% of the platform's movement for the year.
The representation of new creations within this top 100 is considerable:
63% of the releases are entirely new brands.
Established franchises secured 52.5% of the financial share in this group, equivalent to $1.25 billion.
The title Crimson Desert alone captured about 18% of the revenue allocated to new intellectual properties present in the ranking.
Though belonging to the group of new projects alongside Meccha Chameleon, the production from Pearl Abyss demonstrated sales strength comparable to traditional sequels.
It is worth noting that all metrics presented by Alinea Analytics are market estimates and do not constitute official reports published by Valve.
Boosting revenue with major titles in a democratic environment like Steam demonstrates the undeniable vigor of computers. On the other hand, seeing that very few blockbusters consume the largest slice of this billion exposes the harmful revenue concentration in the industry, where few giants dominate the digital shelves while hundreds of independent productions struggle for visibility to avoid closing their doors.
