Star Fox do Super Nintendo receives a native port on PC
Bringing a fresh spark to 16-bit era classics through the devotion of knowledgeable fans is the ideal way to preserve video game history, addressing old technical constraints without losing the essence of the original experience. The timeless Star Fox, initially released for the Super Nintendo, was unofficially adapted for Windows under the name Star Fox Enhanced, allowing the game to run at frame rates up to 480 fps and offering broad support for 16:9, 21:9, and even 32:9 monitors.
Crafted by developer kandowontu — also known for the popular romhack Star Fox EX —, the project is hosted on GitHub and builds upon the open-source UltraStarFox, a free recreation of the game’s original 1993 source code. The link gained traction online after the Japanese account @yoshinokentarou shared the project.
The default frame rate for the port is set at 60 fps, with a user-adjustable option. On the original console hardware, the game operated at about 20 Hz, which would prevent simple speed increases without the Arwing ship spinning out of control or breaking physics; to counter this, the software runs the original logic in the background while interpolating models and camera at the chosen frequency.
A legendary SNES masterpiece "Star Fox" is getting powered up and unofficially ported to "Windows"!!
This masterpiece has a default of 60fps, with a maximum option of 480fps. It also supports wide screens like 16:9, 21:9, and 32:9, and allows mouse operation.
It even supports MODs! https://t.co/CRQeuLEf3P pic.twitter.com/n1qVyeiw5y— Yoshino @ Renpo (renpou.com) (@yoshinokentarou) August 28, 2026
In terms of peripherals, the project supports a variety of controllers, XInput, Steam Input, as well as keyboard and mouse. Using a mouse allows for aiming control in a mode inspired by the Super Scope accessory, and it also lets users adjust the camera during cinematic sequences and customize the interface based on monitor format.
The project supports the following internal resolutions:
16:9 at 400×224
16:10 at 360×224
21:9 at 520×224
32:9 at 800×224
The package comes with debugging features, a frame counter, customizable crosshair, and cheat options to disable collisions and provide unlimited ammunition.
As it derives from UltraStarFox, the project includes built-in content from Star Fox EX version 1.11.03, adding new levels, additional ships, and redesigned menus.
To run the application, users need to provide a legal copy of the original game during the initial run for data extraction.
Compatible file revisions are as follows:
Star Fox (Japan) 1.0 and 1.1
Star Fox (USA) 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2
Starwing (Europe) 1.0 and 1.1
Starwing (Germany) 1.0
Downloadable files are available at the developer's directory on GitHub (github.com/kandowontu/starfox-enhanced).
Utilizing reverse engineering to overcome technical limitations from the Super Nintendo era and providing full support for modern displays showcases the talent of the programming community in preserving historic titles. Ensuring a classic space shooter remains smooth and playable on today’s computers is an admirable feat that surpasses the indifference shown by many companies toward their own catalogs.
