On the day Chrono Trigger completes 30 years of history — since its original release in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, fans received a direct surprise from Square Enix. The company confirmed that several projects related to the iconic RPG are in progress, reigniting hopes for a possible remake or remaster of one of the most beloved games of all time.

In an official statement published on social media, Square Enix declared:

"As we celebrate the 30th anniversary, we will release several projects that go beyond the gaming world over the next year, to express our gratitude to everyone who has played Chrono Trigger so far."

The announcement, although vague, was enough to stir the community, which has been asking for a worthy remake for years, especially after the resounding success of Final Fantasy VII Remake, which set the standard for modern adaptations of classic RPGs from Square Enix.

It is worth remembering that Chrono Trigger was born from a legendary partnership, the so-called "Dream Project", which united Yuji Horii (creator of Dragon Quest), Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy), and Akira Toriyama, the mastermind behind Dragon Ball, responsible also for the character design of the game.

Originally released for the Super Nintendo, the game later received versions for Nintendo DS, PlayStation 1, Steam, iOS, and Android, but never received a complete remake, making the recent announcement even more significant.

What to expect from the "several projects"?

Despite the natural expectation for a remake, the phrase used by Square Enix, mentioning that the projects "go beyond the gaming world," raises other possibilities, such as:

  • Official collectibles and merchandise (figures, vinyl soundtrack, art books);
  • Special events or collaborations with other games;
  • Media adaptations, such as anime, manga, or even an animated series;
  • New updated versions (high-quality remaster or a "pixel remaster" similar to what was done with Final Fantasy I-VI).

However, for many fans, the dream is still a complete remake with modern graphics, something that could retell the iconic journey of Crono, Marle, Frog, Lucca, and company with the depth that the title deserves.

Since the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, the community has been urging Square Enix to look with the same care at Chrono Trigger, especially for its engaging narrative, innovative combat system, and unforgettable soundtrack by Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu.

Another relevant point is that Chrono Cross, the spiritual sequel to Chrono Trigger, received a remaster in 2022, the Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, which further increased the expectation that the company will revisit the first game in the series.

What comes next?

Although Square Enix did not reveal specific dates, the mention that "over the next year" we will see news indicates that 2025 could be a year full of tributes and new content related to Chrono Trigger.

Whether a remake, remaster, or a series of commemorative products, one thing is certain: the legacy of Chrono Trigger remains alive and stronger than ever, with a legion of fans eagerly waiting to embark again (or for the first time) on this adventure that defied time.

And you? What do you hope to see on this 30th anniversary? A worthy remake? An official animation? Or maybe a sequel? The only certainty for now is that Chrono Trigger has returned to the spotlight — and that, in itself, is a victory for the fans.
