Square Enix justifies errors on the Kingdom Hearts cover.
Resorting to unnecessary reworks due to lack of basic proofreading before releasing the official image of a significant collection is an embarrassing disregard for the audience. Square Enix denied any involvement of generative artificial intelligence in the illustration of Kingdom Hearts Collection, attributing the series of visual distortions on the cover to an alleged human error committed by its internal development team.
The community's reaction gained momentum once the promotional material was unveiled in June.
A company representative told the GameSpot site that all visual elements were drawn without automated tools, admitting only faults in the quality control process.
The mistakes pointed out by players are surprising due to the lack of attention to obvious points:
Donald Duck is seen with three fingers on one hand and four on the other
The clock hands on the tower are not correctly aligned, and the details around the gears appear blurred and imprecise
The Keyblades display chains of inconsistent lengths
Amidst the buzz on social media, the company released a revised version attempting to fix the anomalies in the Disney character’s hands. However, the correction overlooked the zipper on Sora’s jacket, showing no logical fit, and a third version emerged on YouTube just altering the framing of the main characters.
The original piece with imperfections remains posted on the franchise's official Twitter profile.
Unfazed by the art team's blunders, the Kingdom Hearts Collection bundles the main titles of the franchise in one package:
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5
Kingdom Hearts 2.8
Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind (DLC)
The bundle arrives on October 6 for the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Delivering careless images of such iconic characters, only to end up patching the images on social networks, reflects an unnecessary amateurism for a brand of this caliber. Respecting the illustrators' work and enforcing rigorous quality control before hitting the publish button should be basic requirements for any major release.
