Square Enix explains the rush to release Rebirth on the Switch 2.
Square Enix has chosen to reveal the brief four-month gap between the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and the arrival of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on the Switch's successor. In an interview with The Outer Haven, director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that the intent is to keep players' excitement alive, preventing the journey of Cloud Strife from being interrupted by endless waits. There's a subtle realization that the company wants to quickly saturate Nintendo's new hardware to secure sales, but it remains to be seen if the audience will have the energy (and budget) to tackle two large RPGs in such a short span.
Although the release appears rushed, the team assures that everything was meticulously planned. Hamaguchi revealed that optimization carried out for the first game served as a foundation for the second, making the transition smoother than anticipated.
"The main drive was to maintain the players' excitement who began their journey on the new console, ensuring the trilogy's experience didn't feel disjointed." — explained the director, trying to refute the notion that the process was hurried.
The primary concern behind the scenes was whether the portable mode of the new console could handle the vast open world of Rebirth. There was genuine fear that the scale of the world would demand too much computational power, but Square Enix claims to have used "technical ingenuity" to reassess lighting and rendering. There is a subtle critique that this kind of "ingenuity" sometimes leads to visual compromises only noticed when the console starts to heat up in your hands, but the team's confidence suggests that Nintendo's hardware is more formidable than many expected.
With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth set to release on June 4, 2026, the company is already looking forward, utilizing this experience to pave the way for the third and final chapter of the saga.
Four-month gap between games on the new system;
Focus on maintaining a unified technical base for optimization;
Official release date for Rebirth: June 4, 2026;
Portable mode was the team's greatest engineering challenge.
This launch strategy shows an aggressive Square Enix, ready to dominate the initial catalog of the new console. If the technical quality remains consistent, owners of the Switch's successor will experience the trilogy fully, without the years-long gaps endured by players on other platforms.
