After a brief period in early access, South of Midnight, the new and atmospheric title from Compulsion Games, is now available to all players — whether you purchased the full edition for R$ 199.00 on PC and Xbox Series X|S, or if you are a subscriber to Game Pass, whether on PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate.

Officially launched this Tuesday, April 9, 2025, the game arrives with the mission of marking the return of the studio that has already brought us Contrast and the controversial, but stylish, We Happy Few. Now, with one foot in the supernatural and the other in the rich mythology of the Southern United States, South of Midnight dives deep into an experience that mixes third-person adventure, narrative action, and a unique aesthetic.

“From the creators of We Happy Few, comes a modern tale of macabre folklore, where mythical creatures and ancient magic intertwine with a personal narrative of healing, inheritance, and confronting the past.”

In control of the protagonist Hazel, players will explore a world inspired by American southern folklore, where legends come to life in the form of dark creatures, restless spirits, and a dense and stylized environment. When a disaster strikes her hometown, Hazel is called to fulfill her destiny as a Weaver, someone with the mystical power to mend broken spiritual bonds.

Among the game's main technical and narrative features, we highlight:

  • Third-person exploration with a focus on combat and puzzle-solving;
  • Stylized artistic setting, with the use of cell shading and fluid animations;
  • Mythological creatures inspired by legends of the Southern US;
  • Story centered on family identity, trauma, and the power of connection;
  • Original soundtrack with a strong influence of Southern blues and gospel;
  • Accessibility guaranteed via Game Pass, reinforcing Microsoft's commitment to day one catalog.

It is worth mentioning that the game has been available since April 3 for those who opted for the early purchase of the deluxe version, but now it is officially playable for everyone. And for those who are still unsure about whether it is worth the investment or downloading via Game Pass, the initial reception has been mostly positive, with praise focused on the artistic originality and cultural setting — even though some point out a certain limitation in combat variety and challenges.

Compulsion Games, now under the umbrella of Xbox Game Studios, continues to bet on authorial experiences and dense narratives. The choice of a little explored setting in games, mixing magical realism with social criticism and cultural heritage, positions South of Midnight as one of the most unique experiences of the first half of 2025.

It remains to be seen if Hazel, with her new mission as a Weaver, will also intertwine the threads of commercial success with critical acclaim — something the studio has always sought but has not yet achieved on a large scale.

Have you started your journey through this dark and fascinating folklore? If so, tell us what you think. And if you haven't tried it yet, South of Midnight could be exactly the modern fable that your game catalog needed.
