Sony will close the PlayStation Stars program in 2025
Sony announced that it will officially end the PlayStation Stars loyalty program, less than three years after its launch in July 2022. The initiative, which aimed to reward PlayStation 5 users with points convertible into benefits through specific purchases or activities, will be phased out by November 2026.
Since May 13, 2025, new users can no longer join the program. In addition, anyone who cancels their participation will lose accumulated points, with no possibility of return. Registered users can still earn points until July 23, 2025 and will have time to redeem them until November 3, 2026.
The digital collectibles — 3D miniatures of characters and commemorative items — will remain accessible indefinitely. Among them is, for example, the infamous bobblehead of Jim Ryan, former CEO of PlayStation.
In an official post on the PlayStation blog, Grace Chen, vice president of advertising network, loyalty, and licensed products for the brand, explained the decision:
"Since the program's launch, we have learned a lot by evaluating the types of activities our players value most. As a company, we are always evolving with market and community trends."
"Through this analysis, we have decided to redirect our efforts and discontinue the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate the lessons learned and seek ways to expand on them in the future."
The company did not announce an immediate replacement for the program or share details about the conclusions drawn during its operation.
The PlayStation Stars functioned as a direct response to Xbox Rewards, a similar program maintained by Microsoft. Initially, the service offered rewards in exchange for digital purchases, participation in promotional campaigns, surveys, and interactions with PS5 system features. However, over time, it underwent modifications that made it less attractive, such as reducing the points' validity period from 24 to 12 months and excluding PlayStation Plus subscription purchases as a source of points, announced in October 2024.
Additionally, in mid-2024, the program faced a month of instability, a period during which it was unavailable to users. Now, with its confirmed end, Sony seems to be ending another initiative without being able to maintain its relevance in the long term, something that has also happened with other social interaction and community features of the brand in recent years.
