With strong performance from the PlayStation division, the Japanese giant is only behind Toyota in market value

The Sony Group Corporation has just achieved a significant milestone: the company has surpassed Mitsubishi and become the second largest company in Japan in terms of market value. Valued at US$ 149.32 billion, the owner of PlayStation is now only behind Toyota, which remains in the lead with US$ 231.69 billion.

The growth of Sony comes at a time of transition for the company, which has been facing challenges in the live services sector and strategic changes in its gaming division. Still, the commercial performance of the PlayStation 5 has been essential in keeping the company high, reinforcing the importance of the gaming market within the corporate structure of the Japanese giant.

The rise of Sony and the impact of the gaming sector

Despite having a diversified presence, encompassing cinema, music, electronics, and image sensors, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) — the division responsible for PlayStation — continues to be a key factor in the group's financial success. In its latest fiscal report, the company highlighted that the games and online services sector was the biggest growth driver.

The advancement of Sony in the Japanese stock market reflects the increasing influence of video games on the global economy. Additionally, the strategy of expanding beyond consoles, with exclusive game releases for PC and subscription services, has been showing positive results.

A trajectory of innovation: from electronics store to the top of technology

The Sony has not always been the powerhouse we know today. Founded in 1946, under the name Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, the company started as a small electronics workshop, helping to rebuild Japan after the war. Among its first products were radios and even electric pots.

Since then, the company has undergone several transformations, becoming a giant in entertainment and technology. With the launch of the PlayStation in 1994, Sony entered the gaming market, revolutionizing the industry and solidifying the console as one of the most popular in history.

Currently, Sony PlayStation is preparing for new challenges, including the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro and major releases such as Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yōtei, and GTA VI. If the success of PS5 continues to drive the company, it will not be surprising if, in the future, Sony aims for the top spot and challenges Toyota's dominance in Japan.
