Sony spends US$ 457 million to own Snoopy

Sony has decided that it doesn't have cute enough IPs and opened its wallet, shelling out $457 million to secure 80% of Peanuts Worldwide. The announcement, made during the fiscal report, confirms that the Japanese giant bought the stake from the Canadian WildBrain and now holds majority control over Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the gang. The family of Charles M. Schulz retains the remaining 20%, probably watching from the sidelines as Sony Music Entertainment Japan and Sony Pictures plan to turn the melancholic Charlie Brown into a global powerhouse of music, movies, and live events.

It's theoretically positive news for the group's financial health, as the accounting revaluation of this deal yielded an immediate profit of $286.5 million for the music division. On paper, director Lin Tao states that the idea is to use Sony's global distribution network to make the Peanuts universe "more accessible." In practice, this means we can expect a flood of musical collaborations and, who knows, Snoopy appearing in some random crossover in cinemas or in PlayStation marketing campaigns.

On the other hand, there is a critical question: will the minimalist and existentialist charm of the 1950s comic strips survive the "multimedia conglomerate" treatment by Sony? Historically, when big technology companies buy classic IPs to "expand the brand value in the long term," the result is usually a saturation of products that lose the soul of the original material. Seeing Sony Pictures promising to "broaden the reach" sounds like a warning that we will have new movies and series coming out of an industrial assembly line.

For those who enjoy animation and music, the integration with Sony Music's catalog could yield something interesting, but the fear of seeing Charlie Brown turn into a generic marketing puppet is real. The deal is expected to be finalized within this fiscal year, and from there, the sky (or Sony's marketing budget) is the limit for the world's most famous beagle.
