Sony sells 61 Million PlayStation 5 Consoles, But Faces Decline in Hardware Sales
Sony has just released its financial report for the period from April 1 to June 30, 2024, revealing that the PlayStation 5 has reached an impressive milestone of 61.7 million units sold globally. In the last quarter, the company sold 2.4 million consoles, a decrease of 3.3 million compared to the same period last year.
Despite the decrease in hardware sales, Sony's gaming division still shows a strong performance. Overall segment revenues grew by 12% year over year, while operating profit rose by 32%, from $335 million to $443 million. The company attributes this growth to the increase in sales of first-party titles and network services, such as PlayStation Plus. Currently, PSN has 116 million monthly active users.
However, game sales decreased, totaling 53.6 million units compared to 56.5 million in the same quarter of 2023. Digital distribution continues to dominate, accounting for 80% of game sales. Sony also adjusted its sales and operating revenue forecasts for the gaming division by 3% for the fiscal year 2024-2025.
Analyzing the report, an expert commented:
"Even with a relatively quiet year in terms of new software releases, the numbers are solid, especially with the increase in the price of PlayStation Plus. However, the drop in hardware sales is significant. Sony hopes that new releases, such as Astro Bot, can reverse this trend and stimulate new PS5 sales."
