Sony backtracks on decision that harms PC players

If you paid attention to the news in 2024, one thing must have outraged you, or at least made you doubt a little about what Sony wanted when they made that decision.

Obviously, I am talking about the need to create an account on PSN to be able to play Sony games on PC, which caused problems for some games of the brand, which could no longer be played in several countries. The game that was most affected was the great success in live-service, Helldivers, from Arrowhead Game Studios, which saw many of its players disappear overnight, since PSN is not available in several countries, something that affected other games from the distributor.

Luckily, the decision was reversed and this must be wonderful for many players who had to request refunds for games they really wanted to play.

On January 29th, PlayStation announced through a blog post that they would start offering PC players in-game bonus items and rewards if they chose to create and log in with a PSN account. This is cool, but the bigger news is that Sony also confirmed in the blog post that they stopped forcing players to use a PSN account to play these single player games: God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and the upcoming PC releases of The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Spider-Man 2.

"A PlayStation Network account will become optional for these titles on PC," Sony said. "Players who still choose to sign in with a PlayStation Network account will also enjoy additional benefits such as trophies and friend management."

The PC version of Ghost of Tsushima will still require a PSN account for online multiplayer mode, but it never required one for single player mode, so apparently it was not affected by this change.

It's good to see that Sony has backtracked on this senseless idea, and that it's better to reward the players than to force them to do it, since the PlayStation Network is not available everywhere.
