Sony and NCSoft announce Horizon Steel Frontiers, a mobile MMORPG
NCSoft and Sony have announced Horizon Steel Frontiers, a new MMORPG set in the Horizon universe from Guerrilla, with a primary focus on mobile devices. The partnership between the South Korean NCSoft (Guild Wars, Lineage) and Sony/Guerrilla was confirmed, revealing the game through a 10-minute gameplay video.
Horizon Steel Frontiers will be a massively multiplayer Horizon experience, which will include:
Character customization
Social features
Boss fights in a raid style
The game seems to be inspired by Capcom's PvE in Monster Hunter, using the characteristic dinosaur-robot enemies from the Horizon franchise. Players take on the role of machine hunters in the Deadlands, cooperating or competing for resources.
There is still no release date, and Jan-Bart van Beek, head of Guerrilla Games studio, confirmed in the video that the game is mostly built for mobile devices. Horizon Steel Frontiers will be playable on PC through Purple, NCSoft's proprietary game platform. There was no mention of a PlayStation release or broader consoles.
This announcement comes at a time of expansion for the franchise. Horizon is one of PlayStation's biggest franchises, with 32.7 million units sold across all titles until April 16, 2023.
Guerrilla is said to be working on its own Horizon multiplayer live service game, which is expected to be released on PlayStation 5 and possibly PC. Guerrilla had already confirmed the existence of this multiplayer game in December 2022, indicating it would have a new cast of characters and a new art style.
Additionally, a full sequel to Horizon: Forbidden West (2022) is said to be in development at the studio, with the "next adventure of Aloy" mentioned in April 2023. This new title will join the first two games and the PlayStation VR2 spin-off, Horizon: Call of the Mountain, as main entries in the franchise. A live-action Horizon film was also announced by Sony in January during CES 2025, with filming expected to begin in 2026 and a release in 2027.
NCSoft and Sony have announced the MMORPG Horizon Steel Frontiers for mobile devices and PC (via Purple), with no release date. The game, focused on PvE and machine hunting, is an expansion of the Horizon franchise (32.7 million units sold until April 2023). Guerrilla continues to develop their own multiplayer live service game for PS5 and the sequel to Horizon: Forbidden West.
