Shinji Mikami bets on independence with Unbound studio

The master of survival horror decided that the best path to create is away from the reins of large corporations. Shinji Mikami formalized the foundation of Unbound, a company described as completely independent and focused on AAA titles. The producer's website, according to VGC, had been online for about a year, but only now the news has spread like wildfire. Operating since 2023, Mikami's new home wants to focus on new intellectual properties for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is a relief to see a creator of this caliber seeking freedom, although the history of veterans trying to set up giant studios from scratch does not always end in happy endings due to the astronomical production costs.

The current team consists of 50 employees, but the plan is to triple this number soon. Among the confirmed names is Masato Kimura, a long-time partner who has been involved in milestones such as Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. Kimura brought an interesting definition about the studio's philosophy: they seek cutting-edge visual quality (AAA), but with a slightly more contained content scope (AA), focusing on total immersion. This approach may be the salvation to avoid the project becoming a "black hole" of money, something that often happens when trying to compete with the billion-dollar budgets of traditional publishers.

"Creating something new requires repeated trial and error, implementation and modification, adjustments, and sometimes even deletion. As we create by building and breaking repeatedly, things don't always go as planned and the content changes constantly," explained Masato Kimura about the working method at Unbound.

It is worth remembering that Mikami's departure from Tango Gameworks in 2023 was not the director's only move on the board. He was also linked to Kamuy, a studio mentioned in the credits of Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered. This "musical chairs" between multiple new studios leaves a question in the air: will Unbound have the necessary focus to deliver a masterpiece, or is the legendary developer trying to embrace too many projects simultaneously? The "build and break" culture mentioned by Kimura requires programmers with iron stomachs to deal with constant changes, which can be a challenge when hiring talents in such a volatile market.

What really matters is that Mikami's DNA remains active in the industry. If Unbound can balance technical ambition with the agility of a smaller team, we may see the birth of something that truly shakes up the action and horror genre. On the other hand, the risk of getting lost in an endless cycle of "trial and error" is real and has already brought down promising studios in the past.

We wait to see if all this flexibility will produce a memorable game or just an endless development schedule. Judging by the names involved, the technical foundation is solid, but execution in the real world is what will separate the wheat from the chaff.
