Sekiro will receive an anime adaptation with a premiere in 2026
Finally, FromSoftware will see one of its most iconic universes expanded to the screens. The studio Qzil.la, known for Champignon Witch, has confirmed that the showing of Sekiro: No Defeat will begin in 2026. The plot intends to retell the journey of the shinobi Wolf on his mission to rescue Lord Kuro in Ashina. Although the original material is of unquestionable quality, adaptations of games to anime do not always manage to translate the pace of combat, and it remains to be seen if the studio will be able to handle the necessary visual brutality.
The global broadcasting exclusivity has been secured by Crunchyroll, leaving out only markets such as China, Russia, and Japan itself, where the work will debut directly in cinemas. It is a curious move for a production that comes from a game that won the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards in 2019. The Japanese dubbing cast brings relief to fans, keeping the original game's interpreters.
One point that generates some melancholy, but also respect, is the choice of the soundtrack. The theme song, entitled "Blu", is a work of the late master Ryuichi Sakamoto. Using a posthumous composition by Sakamoto elevates the artistic weight of the project, taking it out of the common place of just another product derived from a successful software. The original game, which passed through PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC via Steam and even through the defunct Google Stadia, is still remembered for its punitive difficulty.
The trailer already allows to see part of this sonic and visual aesthetic. It is always risky when a studio decides to tamper with classics from FromSoftware, but maintaining the original voice cast suggests that fidelity to the tone of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a priority. It is important that the animation does not get lost in expository dialogues and manages to maintain the contemplative silence that the game executed so well.
