SEGA cancels Super Game after assessing risks

SEGA cancels Super Game after assessing risks

Recognizing that an ambitious project could lead to uncontrolled costs and stepping back before endangering the company's well-being is a remarkable act of corporate maturity that ensures the studio's future stability. SEGA has announced the final cancellation of the Super Game initiative, an ambitious games-as-a-service ecosystem that had been in development since 2021, aiming to push the traditional industry boundaries.

The project was initially presented as a massive global AAA endeavor, with planned investments nearing $1 billion, split between internal productions and acquisitions of new studios.

In an interview with the Nikkei, republished by VGC, SEGA's President and Chief Operating Officer, Shuji Utsumi, explained the reasons behind the initiative's closure.

The executive stated that the company realized a disproportionate operational expansion was necessary to support the service's scale, making the investment exceedingly risky given the global economic conditions.

Despite stopping Super Game, the director confirmed that the games-as-a-service model remains in SEGA's strategic plans.

Utsumi highlighted that the company actively continues in this segment by supporting titles like Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, launching Sega Football Club Champions 2026, and producing Creative Assembly's Total War: Warhammer 40,000, which is entering closed beta testing this year with plans for ongoing post-launch expansion.

This change of course comes after SEGA experienced losses with the cancellation of Hyenas, a title in development by Creative Assembly that was shelved in 2023 due to internal restructuring.

The challenges in the service-based market place SEGA among other large companies striving for balance in this sector, much like Sony.

In contrast, Tencent reaffirmed its commitment to games-as-a-service to GamesIndustry.biz, citing the success of titles like Honor of Kings, League of Legends, and Valorant under the leadership of Yong-yi Zhu, vice president of the company's games division.

Cutting costs and aborting a financial black hole like Super Game is a wise move by SEGA that prevents massive layoffs and preserves the company's resources. However, seeing Shuji Utsumi's leadership persist in chasing the mirage of games-as-a-service despite the Hyenas debacle shows a tiring corporate stubbornness, unable to acknowledge that the community prefers focused and well-crafted experiences over another title centered on infinite microtransactions.
