Sandfall Interactive maintains a small team despite the success of Clair Obscur
The Sandfall Interactive studio, responsible for the success Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, does not plan to expand its team to target the AAA market. The programming leader, Tom Guillermin, stated in an interview with Automaton that the current team has the "right" size for creating a "full-priced" turn-based RPG.
Despite being a AA size studio, Sandfall Interactive achieved colossal success with the release of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which sold 3.3 million copies in 33 days. Industry analysts estimate that the game could easily surpass the 10 million mark.
"I think, for now, I prefer to work in a small team. I'm not sure what the 'ideal team size' would be," said Guillermin. "But when it comes to making a full-priced turn-based RPG, I believe the team we have now is the right size."
The creative director Guillaume Broche detailed the team composition: "We had five people working on environments, two on the story. And I think, about three to six people worked on the cinematics. The music was done by four people." Broche explained that the team, despite being small, is highly qualified due to the rigorous selection process, which included over 200 interviews to form the initial group.
With the AAA game market facing challenges and a growing demand for AA size games, Sandfall Interactive seems satisfied with its current structure. The main actress of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 also commented on the game's success and the popularity of turn-based combat, stating she is "happy that people are rediscovering it again."
