Rocksteady is developing a new Batman game - and already eyeing the next generation.

After the failure of Suicide Squad, the studio returns to its roots with a single-player game

Yes, it seems that Rocksteady Studios has finally listened to the fans! After the lukewarm (to say the least catastrophic) reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, everything indicates that the British studio has returned to its roots and is already working on a new single-player game of Batman.

The project is still shrouded in mystery, with no confirmation that it will be set in the Arkhamverse - the universe that made Rocksteady shine. However, a recent job vacancy on the WB Games website gave an important clue: the game is being developed for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the next generation of consoles.

Next generation is already on Rocksteady's radar

The most intriguing detail emerged in the description of a job vacancy for Senior Engine Programmer, where Warner Bros. Games directly mentions support for next-generation hardware.

"Your work will enable the team to deliver the highest quality gaming experience on our target hardware, including high-performance PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and the next generation of consoles."

This suggests that the next Batman could be a cross-generation title, following the example of what happened in the transition between PS4/Xbox One and PS5/Xbox Series. Considering that the technological leap to the next generation may be even less dramatic than in the past, it makes sense that developers are already preparing for this future.

But what would these "next generations of consoles" be?

PlayStation 6? Sony will inevitably release new hardware, maintaining its history of console generations every 6-7 years.

New Xbox? Microsoft has already said it remains committed to physical consoles and there are rumors about a portable Xbox (could it be the "XBoy"?).

Nintendo Switch 2? The successor to the Switch is about to be revealed and, if Nintendo finally invests in hardware with power close to the Xbox Series S, it could receive major multiplatform releases.

If the Batman game is aiming for cross-gen, this means that its release may still be a few years away.

Rocksteady's redemption?

Rocksteady Studios became synonymous with well-made superhero games when it released the Batman Arkham trilogy, raising the industry standard with Arkham Asylum (2009), Arkham City (2011), and Arkham Knight (2015). But the situation changed drastically with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (2024), a live-service game that received harsh criticism and did not excite players.

With this new Batman, Rocksteady may be trying to regain fans' trust. But is there still room for a new Batman game after so many adaptations?

What is certain is that, with development still in the early stages, we will have to wait a long time to see this new game in action. And, as always, everything can change along the way - who knows if this supposed new Batman ends up exclusive to PS7 or even to Apple Arcade?

Only time will tell.
